Water efficient appliances to save water

Water facts:

Even though almost 80 percent of Earth is covered with water, only 3 percent of the planet's water resources represent fresh water sources. It is a matter of fact that less than 1 percent of all water is available for human consumption, the rest is salty ocean water, or freshwater that is bound up in glaciers and polar ice caps. Also of the water available to humans, animals, and plants, only a tiny fraction is used as drinking water. A major percentage of what is consumed is used to create electricity, grow crops, run factories, and for household and sanitation needs.

Conserving water at home by water efficient appliances:

One very effective measure to check water wastage at home is to use water-conserving devices. Most of the commonly used appliances at home can be modified to conserve water or bought specifically for their water conserving qualities. For example, spray taps and faucet aerators are an effective alternative instead of the steady flow taps. It also enables them to discharge a smaller volume of water to achieve the same results. For saving water in the bathroom low flow showerheads can be fitted to maximize water coverage and also minimizes water volume. Water can also be saved in the toilet by adding a plastic bottle filled with water, sealed inside the toilet cistern or by adjusting the ballcock. This reduces the amount of water used per flush to a minimum extent. Other than this a dual flush toilet system can be fitted to discharge a small volume of water for liquid waste and a larger volume for solid waste.

It is matter of fact that efficient flushing depends upon the velocity of the water rather than the volume that tends to be grossly out of proportion with the waste that the water flushes. Another very effective method to conserve water in the toilet is through installation of a compost toilet appropriately. In a compost type one can do away with using water to flush away the excreta. These types of toilets are mostly prominent in the east and the have added benefits of producing a rich compost at the end of the process that returns the nutrients back to the soil which would otherwise end up in rivers.
