The more is the knowledge how a Roman shade works, the better convenient it will be to design and make one's own window treatments. The various types of Roman shades for e.g. – Classic, hobbled, relaxed and even top-down fold uses the same principle. The Classic shade pulls up from the bottom when opened. Each column's bottom ring is tied to the lift cord then threaded up through the remaining rings. The pulley is also used to mount the lift cord directly above that column of rings on the head rail. Then the cords are threaded sideways along the mounting board. Then it exit one side of the shade. By pulling on the lift cords the shade is operated.

Making Roman Shades

Decorator fabric, Lining Fabric, fusible web, plastic rings and polyester twill tape are the raw materials required for making roman shades in windows. Other supporting materials are sewing rings, mounting boards, Awning cleat Weight bar, angle irons and round head screws. Oh yes, also paper and pencil. Now a common technique for making roman shades. Seam the fabric widths along with lining fabric together. Put that shade fabric on flat surface and place lining on the shade fabric. Then pin in place. Mark lines across top, bottom a repeat for opposite side. Also mark placement rings in the horizontal rows at upper edge of hem. Side by side tape or pin lengths of twill tape to work surface. Catch tapes in stitching by stitching hem in place. Again pin the twill tapes to ring marks. Go on with the creativity and stitching skills and finally cut and tie the cord for first row securely at bottom ring. Fabric glue should be applied to the knots to prevent them from fraying or becoming untied. Finally screw the awning cleat into the window frame or the wall.

Importance of Roman Shades

Roman shades control light, provide protection from a harsh sun, keep out the cold and most importantly provide privacy. Windows are used to admit light, air and to allow views of the outside world. But ranging from purely decorative to hardworking, the windows and their treatments play a myriad of other roles, an insulating effect is been provided by a Roman shade. A dead-air space (the space between the fabric and the window), prevents air currents, cold or hot, from circulating.
