Tough bed base
Material used
The bed base is the platform a bed rests on. It is usually made of wood or metal. The bed base should be tough, as it withstands the wear and tear caused by use and improves the life of the mattress used on it. Also a tough one gives the user a comfortable feeling and a peaceful sleep. The planks of woods used, range from soft to hard and tough and the prices vary accordingly. They are often upholstered to improve their properties. The metallic ones provide better toughness and long life but are costly and not as attractive as wooden ones. Also the overall weight of the base increases.
Types of bed bases
Mattresses are utilized along with one of the many alternatives of bed bases – divans, bedsteads, adjustable beds or bunks beds. It is necessary to confirm that the mattress and base are compatible for combined use. The divan bed base can be classified into 4 types. The Sprung Edge type enhances the durability of the mattress by operating like a shock absorber. The Solid or Platform Top type has a tough top plate frequently prepared from hardboard. These are cheaper than the earlier type. The Firm Edge type has a tough, wooden frame with small, heavy-duty springs. The Slatted Base type comprises of laminated soft woods. Bedsteads are made of metal, wood, plastics, upholstered or a blend of these. Iron Bed bases are manufactured from cold rolled tubes to form an integrated system. They are particularly used to attain sturdiness and toughness. Also elecrostatically-applied coats provide scratch resistant properties. Brass bed bases have relatively low toughness and are used primarily for aesthetic reasons. Rolled and forged high carbon steel is very tough and very hard and can used for bases. A hybrid waterbed mattress is made of a tough polyethylene foam material.
Selection of Material
The toughness of the bed base varies as per the material used. Depending upon the service required, the type of bed base can be chosen. Sometimes Steel Bed Bases are available with a lifetime warranty. They are very tough and also a brass or aluminum finish looks very appealing.
