Social Awareness to save water

Of the total surface area of the earth approximately 70% is covered by water. However this figure belies to the fact that there is a need to conserve water. This is because although 70% of the land surface area is covered by water most of this includes salty water which belongs to the oceans and seas. This water cannot be used for our daily and most basic purposes such as drinking, bathing and washing. Only a fraction of the total water on the earth is actually fresh water and can be used for the above purposes. Thus there is an urgent need for water conservation of our available fresh water resources. On of the best and most effective ways of doing so is by generating social awareness among the general public on the issue of conservation and use of our limited water resources.

Methods of social awareness

If social awareness is to be effective then it must reach out to the illiterate and to rural inhabitants. The correct methods of conserving water must be taught to them. The use of visual media, such as a short presentation on water conservation has proved to be immensely polar and effective. The use of the print media, for those who are literate, is also an effective media to get the message of water conservation out in the open and presented to the masses in a convincing manner. Social awareness must be inculcated over a gradual period of time. Hence bringing this message to children, by way of propagating the need for water conservation in schools, will definitely have a positive impact on these children who have an impressionable mind.

There is another very effective method of propagating social awareness about water conservation and that is by roping in celebrities such as film stars or cricketers to support this cause. When these celebrities, who have a certain aura, appeal and respect among the masses support a certain cause, this cause is bound to catch the attention of those who idolize these people. Thus social awareness on water conservation can successfully and convincingly be brought before the general public
