You never know when a burglar is going to strike so you need to make it as difficult on them as possible.

You should always change the locks and the tumblers when you move in to a new place. You do not want to trust the previous owner to do this because you never know who may have had a key to the house at one time. You may want to consider getting a good alarm system for your home. You should make your home look occupied at all times. Make sure that your lights are on all the time and at different times of the night. If you are not home, you may want to leave a radio or television on so that the neighbors think you are away. Think about putting the key in foil and then bury it in the yard somewhere near by where you can find it easily if you needed to. This would be a good way to make sure that you are always going to have a key but no one else will get to it first.

Never leave notes on the door for service workers. These will act as a good sign for a burglar to walk into your lives. You need to make prior arrangements with them if you cannot be home.
