Hawaiian Orchids

The Big Island of Hawaii is nicknamed as Orchid Island. While visiting orchid farms in Hawaii it is seen that these exotic and vibrant tropical flowers enrich the lives of many families from the mountains as well as the seas. Hawaiian orchids take a long time to grow. Cattelyas take up to 5 years from seed to blooming size, but they're worth waiting for as being the most beautiful flower in the world. Since the climate on the Orchid Island is ideal, Anthuriums and other exotic Hawaiian tropical flowers are all hand selected and give a memorable touch of Hawaii.

Trends of Hawaiian orchids:

Kaleialoha's Dendrobium orchids are exquisitely hand strung and add a traditional Hawaiian aloha to any celebration. They can be found in a single color, such as white or purple, a mix of purple, white and lavender or one of the art shades either alone or in combination with the standard colors. Dendrobiums may look delicate but they are surprisingly strong. When giving a lei (garland of Hawaiian orchids) in Hawaii it is a tradition to accompany the gift with a kiss on the cheek. The wearer will be the center of attention and it is said that one will experience good luck by passing his/ her lei on to someone else.

Growing Hawaiian Phalaenopsis orchids:

There are a couple of cultural things that you should keep in mind while growing Hawaiian orchids. The shorter days and cooler night-time temperatures during autumn cause most healthy Phalaenopsis plants to go into spike at this time. Heating the greenhouse in the evenings can prevent spiking. By keeping the minimum temperature between 75 and 80 degrees the plants continue to grow new leaves and roots. Find a cool windowsill, or place the plants in the garage, or some other cooler, unheated location to give the stimulation the plants need to begin to flower.

Caring for Hawaiian Catteleyas:

Most Cattleya hybrids produce several new growths over the summer months and it is normal, if your plant is healthy and strong, that you would see the development of a flower sheath at the top of the mature growth. If the sheath has begun to turn yellow or brown and dry and the plant has not bloomed, there are many fall blooming hybrids but there are just as many plants that produce new growth over the summer, set the sheath in the fall and then rest. During this rest, the sheath often turns dark and become dry. At this time be careful not allow water to get inside the sheath for any length of time. These Cattleyas bloom in the early spring, when days get longer and temperatures warmer.
