Eliminate distraction
Working from home initially appears solution for distraction problem. Once the home office begins working, they realize they may face even more distractions than those they dealt with in the office. Dealing with these distractions and learning how to reduce them so that they do not obstruct with work can be a challenge. Telephone calls are probably the biggest problems faced by office at home. Tactfully explain that the phone calls are disrupting work routine and ask if the issues can be dealt with on a once weekly basis.
Family and friends:
This is the hardest group of people to persuade and deal with. If there is a separate phone line that is used for company work, do not give out that number to anyone not related to work. While email is handy and helps keep people connected, it can be a huge distraction if not careful tackled. Set up different email accounts, like one for work and one for family and friends to have. Set times to check email. Twice during the day will be adequate. Notify people onsite that if they sent or plan to send an important email, to call first so that one do not miss a deadline or response time. The most important point to remember about email is never use work email account to forward chain letter type emails and leave those for personal account.
Television and radio:
Having a TV or radio on in the background may help alleviate the isolation factor for telecommuters. They can become a distraction too and difficult to get away from. It can become addictive to watch television. Initially it may make feel a part of things and part of the world outside home office, it is another distraction that prevents one from completing work. It can also be very stressful watching too much of the news coverage because one might get focused on that and not work. If one pays more attention to the news, the work will suffer. Stick to scheduled times to watch television and prevent from getting too distracted. Distractions are present with any job, no matter where the job may be located. The important point is preventing distractions before they become a problem and make it difficult to succeed in home office business.
