Developing good habits in family members
To keep your house organized and functioning properly, it is incumbent on each family member to develop good habits. Inculcating these habits into small children and adults will make them more responsible. A better home environment will directly result from the diligent application of these habits. A disorganized home is more the consequence of a lack of proper habits in the household members. Fortunately, bad habits can be unlearned. To break the family member's ingrained bad habits may require time, persistence and patience, but the rewards in the form of an organized home will be worth the efforts.
Common bad habits
Even miniscule corrections can work wonders. For instance, folding the newspaper neatly after reading and placing it on the center table instead of letting its myriad pages float around the living room. Again, washing the coffee mug the instant you have finished drinking coffee instead of letting it linger on the kitchen table. Or piling the dishes in a systematic fashion instead of letting them pile up in a disorganized mess. Or take the case of squeezing the toothpaste tube bottom up instead of in the middle. Or taking off dirty shoes in the passageway before entering the house. Or heaping clothes for the wash in the laundry basket instead of the bathroom floor. Or hanging clothes in the closet instead of wrapping them around the dining chair. Or rearranging the couch cushions in their proper place instead of dumping them on the living room floor. Or leaving the kitchen cabinets open instead of closing them. Or leaving half-eaten food in the refrigerator. Or leaving empty beer cans in the living room instead of in the trash can. The list of bad habits that disorganize a house is literally endless.
The best way to keep your house organized and in top shape is to sharpen the observation skills of wayward family members. Use direct communication to make them comply with good habits. Persevere and you will find family members adopting corrective measures. This acceptance of good habits translates into a better organized home. With good organization, a home will run more efficiently. So hammer away at family members to internalize good habits.
