Traditionally fencing a plot of land meant protection for livestock, animals and even children from getting in or out. Age-old methods meant simply digging into the earth, and fixing up sticks or pickets joined together with horizontal ones to ensure sturdiness and use. Many a modern home has a good fence around it, be it for practical purposes or just to add to the beauty of the place. Fences are also put to use for security or aesthetic purposes around porches and decks.

Rail Fence for porch decks

A deck or a porch is an extension to your house and being outside the house, they require as much care and protection. Wood decks are a perfect party place and putting up a fence that matches the design and dcor of the deck as well as adds to the beauty of the exterior of the house is an important aspect while designing the rail fence. Porches may be just lawns with grass neatly trimmed, but a touch of white or brown can add to the rustic appeal of a beautifully landscaped porch or lawn.

Plastic composite rail fence

High density Polyethylene plastics that are normally found in materials like detergent containers, high grade plastic bags, plastic juice containers that do not easily disintegrate are all recycled and processed to form plastic composite decking materials. Plastic composite rail fence material includes planks, balusters, posts and railing systems that are truly environment friendly and costs lesser than traditionally used wood fences. As these porch deck rail fences have a wood finish, they blend in with the landscape and do not look out of place.

Features of plastic composite rail fences for porches and decks

Plastic composite rail fences cost less and are low on maintenance. They are also long-lasting and not given to wear and tear like wooden rail fences. They do not rot or crack, can withstand high temperatures and rain and also do not require paint or seal or stain to keep them looking great. As these rail fences have the beauty and feel of wood, the rail fences for porches and decks made of plastic composite materials are a long-term alternative to wood.

Installing and maintaining of plastic composite rail fences

Plastic composite rail fences are easy to install and do not require heavy maintenance. Also, since no weatherproofing is required, a one-time investment is enough for beautiful looking outdoors over a longer period of time.

A brand makes a difference to the product. People buy products only trusted brands. These brands are names which have created their own positions in their own fields. Each of the rail and post comes in a slightly different size and shape. Those customers who prefer a uniform and consistent low-maintenance fence, it is strongly suggested considering this product in vinyl.

About Western Red Cedar Split Rail Gates:

Smaller pedestrian size gates are made entirely of wood. Characteristically these gates hang on red cedar posts with standard wood gate hardware that are sold separately. Costing for wood gates can be found with the other western red cedar materials. Large Gate Larger wood gates are demanding since wood as a building material has its restrictions. For these gates, a custom welded galvanized tubular frame has been designed to mount the wood to. The structural frame permits for larger widths. The cedar rail material is mounted for artistic purposes to go with the fence. Chain link type hinges or barrel hinges are over and over again used for hardware.

Advantages and Disadvantages of cedar rail fence:

Cedar split rail fence is one of the most gainful styles for defining boundaries, decorating property, and fencing in livestock, cattle and horses. Cedar rail fencing is also one of the easiest styles of fence to install making it an ideal project for the do-it-yourselfer. Posts are typically set directly in the ground deep without any concrete. A tamping bar is usually used to compress the dirt around the post while backfilling. It is archetypal to have to retamp posts plumb after the ground, which settles around post so that the fence remains upright. This is particularly true if the fence is installed in a wet area or it was wet when the fence was originally installed. Bucketing gravel around the posts instead of backfilling with dirt will help put off posts from leaning under the heavy weight of the rails. Fence requires a chemical addition for the longest-lasting performance, however most installations are never treated.

The trail of Post and Rail:
The one fencing system, which has stood the test of time, tastes, fashion and diversity, is the Post and Rail. Trusted for its solidity, dependability, and simplicity it is almost a part of the family. Over the years, many fencing alternatives have come and gone, but this one just refuses to fade from memory.

The secret of its longevity?

Simplicity, strength, elegance and now, nostalgia, all of these have kept the post and rail active even today. Post & Rail fence is an open fencing design that lets you economically fence the circumference of large or small areas. In the countryside, this fence style has been always chosen to contain livestock. Post & Rail is a flexible and adaptable wood fencing system. It is a sensible choice when used for boundary markers, which differentiate property lines without restricting the view. The post and rail fence is also common sight in ranches and farmhouses. The construction is quite simple. There are posts, which are grounded about 12 – 18 inches below the ground for support and security. There are horizontal rail placed across these posts, which act as barriers. There can be 2 or even 3 rails depending on the height of the post, above the ground. Since the post and rail fence does not prevent smaller pets from sneaking in, it would be fine to blend another feature into this design. One may have a wire netting also if the need to stop pets is felt.

Evolution and progress with the times…

Although cedar has always been an automatic choice for post and rail fences due to the strength, nowadays, alternate materials are also gaining popularity. Plastics and vinyl's have found their way to the fences due to the sheer wide choice in colors, design and convenience in setting up. All said and done, designers and landscapers are innovating and improvising a lot nowadays with the post and Rail patters to give new and exciting options to the customers. A casual search over the net gives us so many options to choose from. The Landscaping of the garden or the courtyards is always done taking the fence also into consideration. There care even metallic option for the Post and Rail fences and wire mesh add ones are also being considered for their utility.

The snake rail fence is a free standing fence which is excellent where soil depth is shallow is known to be as snake rail. One enormous benefit of the snake fence is that it can be built with little more than an axe. You simply tear a ten-foot length of log into rails and lay them interweave on the ground-no postholes to dig or joints to cut. Since it has no stable relation with the ground, the fence can be moved about at will or an opening made at any point. It is best to raise each intersection up on a rock. The simple snake fence becomes unbalanced after it reaches about ten rails high, but can still be raised higher by using crossed rails and riders at every junction, or "lock." These add enough tallness to keep horses from jumping the barrier.

Economy and snake fence

Snake rail fence is not just for show. One of the earliest encounters of many people with principles of rural economy involved the snake fence. A person while passing a zigzag rail fence near Clifton Forge, Virginia, obviously echoing the words of his father, remarked, "Snake fences waste land." In one way you can guess it is true: It's difficult to plow and plant in the zigs and zags. Though, the grazing animals get in there just fine, and the side away from the animals, which cannot be cut, becomes an asylum for wildflowers and birds. Even if the corners can't be refined, some stray seed is bound to take hold there. The best corn and the best tobacco was that which had to be handpicked because it grew in the jamb of the fence.

Unconventional frame

As appropriate as the snake fence was to a new world, it was actually and initially like the log house which is something new and unfamiliar to the English mind. If someone think about it, a snake fence is simply a log house that has been stretched out. For an average Englishman the more recognizable manner of house building was to use upright posts with holes cut through them to receive the horizontal beams. This is the way English people built houses, doors, and windows, and it is how they built fences.

Fencing the house can be very tedious task involving great amount of hard work and skill in it. For any home owner it is vital to have a well defined fencing system which can guard the house with perfection. When fences consist of railings, their size, shape and pattern assume great importance. Thus how the fence railings are cut determine these things.

Fence- Rail

Fences, generally made of wood, have rails. These rails are basically wooden fences made of split logs laid across each other at an angle. These railings are also horizontal wooden logs placed one above the other with some space in between supported by two bigger wooden logs at the ends.

Such fences are easier to make and to place around the house too. However the railings must be cut and made properly with the right angles and thickness for having a proper fence.

Fence- Rail cuttings

Fence rails are cut in various patterns and sizes. Some of the ways are as follows:
1) The vast majority of cuts are made with the fence set at the 90 degree position. This alignment does not take into consideration the angle marks on the SMT. However, if the SMT travel alignment is within tolerance, the angle marks will most likely be very close to true after this alignment. But experts recommend the use of some sort of measuring device instead of relying upon the angle readings of the SMT.
2) In case of square cuts, the crosscut fence must be set 90 degrees to the direction of travel of the SMT and not the blade. It must be noted that, this alignment is also true of standard miter gauge fences.
3) The face of the crosscut fence should be perpendicular to the main table. This is not important for most cross cuts but are required only when compound angle cuts are being done.
4) The West Virginia Lap Rail is not actually a split-rail fence as it is known but is cut at a saw-mill. One side of the Spruce or Hemlock rail is often 'half-round'. The other side shows where the rail was put through a saw. In most cases the half-round side is faced out and the cut-side in.

Conclusion

These are some of the ways in which fence-rails are cut and styled. However there are several ways in which fence rails can be cut. The home owners can also customize the fence-rail cuttings.

A split rail fence is a traditional American fence. It dates back to the pioneer and colonial period to the civil war and the gold rush. These split rail fences are usually 4 feet high and the supporting beams are 10 feet long. However one can mix-match the height of this fence according to your convenience which is the main beauty of these rails.

Steps to install a split rail fence;

1) Pre-installation examination- before installing the fence one should investigate the local area rules. For example building codes which restrict where one can dig to place the fence or the height of the fence.
2) Digging a hole- after taking consideration of all the various building codes one can start digging a hole for planting the fence posts.
3) Attaching the crossbeams- the crossbeams of the fence have to be attached so as to support the fence.
4) Covering each section- each section has to be covered with fencing so as to conclude the installation process.

Appealing features;

One of the most appealing features is that it is very easy to maintain and does not require retouching of paint once it is installed. These rails are widely used till date mainly because it cannot be broken down so easily and that it can repel insects easily. It is easily to install and does not require many tools for its installation. Thus it is user friendly, cost effective and maintenance free.
The only drawback of this kind of fence is that it requires a bit of attention in its initial stages after installation. Once the fence is accustomed to its surroundings u need not nurture it so much.

Utility;

This fence can help keep horses and cows and other livestock; except for smaller animals; away from one's property. These fences are mostly preferred by farmers.

Problems encountered during installation and after;

Digging an appropriate hole for planting the fence posts could be a small problem initially. Another problem faced is that over a period of time the fence may become unstable. The main reason for this is the accumulation of dirt in the conical holes. This problem is faced mainly in winter.

But as the saying goes; a stitch in time saves nine; these fences should be regularly inspected and repaired to avoid huge damages.

About Split Rail Fence -

It is a fence made of logs split lengthwise into rails, held together with spikes in a zigzag pattern. These are typically used for agriculture or as decorative fencing. These fences require more timber than other types and hence not found in wood scarce areas.

The cedar wood (which is usually used) is split from end to end to form several pieces called 'rails' which are stacked on one another. Some of the fences have rails stacked in an interlocking zigzag pattern, making it more self-supporting, easy to build, repair and disassemble. Sometimes, the rails are stacked directly on top of each other, and secured with double fence posts, making it more compact and a permanent structure that is easily repairable.

Why is Pressure Treated Wood used in Split Rail Fence?

Pressure Treated Wood is used in the split rail fence to enhance its durability and strength, and prevent premature wear and tear. Pressure Treated Wood is the wood that is treated with preservatives that protect the wood from insect attacks, fungal growth and wood rot.

Pressure Treatment of Wood -

Pressure treatment makes the wood suitable for long term use under harsh weather conditions. Pressure treating the woods involves a liquid preservative forced into the wood in order to protect it against the insect attack and wood rot. Chromated Copper Arsenate (CCA) and Pentachlorophenol are the most commonly used preservatives. The wood is placed in a container filled with the preservative solution and as the pressure in the container rises, the preservative is forced into the wood, and the excess preservative is drained from the wood and recycled. These days, the wood used for residential and general consumer construction is treated with Alkaline Copper Quat (ACQ) (a copper oxide-quaternary ammonium compound mixture), Copper Azole, Disodium Octaborate Tetrahydrate (DOT) or other chemicals.

Types of Wood that can be Pressure Treated -

Logs used for commercial purpose have different layers. Primary among them are heartwood and sapwood. Heartwood provides the structural strength to the living tree and the sapwood transports the sap from the base of the tree up to the leaves. Sapwood absorbs the preservatives easily than heartwood. So the most commonly used wood species for pressure treating are the ones having a higher percentage of sapwood, like Southern Pine. Other species such as Douglas Fir have more heartwood and have to be modified for the forcing and retaining adequate preservative. Incising (perforating the wood with small slits) may also be utilized to increase the penetration of preservative in heartwood species.

Fencing was traditionally done by simply digging into the earth, and fixing up sticks or pickets joined together with horizontal ones to ensure sturdiness and use. Fence boards were put up together or at a distance depending upon what they were to contain within them. Mostly used in rural areas, fences are of importance in small and big towns as well as homes that have large spaces surrounding them and those on the outskirts of cities.

Split rail fences

Split rail fences made from cedar, spruce or pressure treated wood and can be used around yards, pools, and gardens, for pet and poultry containment or simply to show division of your property. The wooden boards that are put up horizontally could be flat or designed to resemble gothic structures, dog-ears or any style that you can think of. These boards are then held together with posts at regular intervals. In case of split rail fences, only two or three horizontal boards are necessary for fencing, hence the cost is reduced and convenience of installing it is enhanced.

Split rail fence supplies

Pickets and boards, a posthole shovel, a level, string and a good amount of nails and bolts are enough to put up a sturdy split rail fence. If the area to be fenced is not really very big, a split rail fence can give an elegant charm to the place. Old world rustic designs done by painting in different tones can do wonders to the appearance of the split rail fence. The distance between the split rail fence boards would depend upon what is being contained inside which could be animals, children, gardens, pools, yards or as plain and simple just dividing lines.
Rail fences are used where:
1) Boundaries
2) Livestock containment
3) Horse corrals
4) Decorative landscape fencing
5) Golf course cart path boundary.

Farm fences:

The split rail fence blends naturally and gives attractive look to the environment. Mostly these fences are found in the farm places and golf areas. The horse farms are made of split rail fence. So that the horses are safe in. and can run freely inside. The benefits of the wood are the strength of the fence so that it keeps the horse safe inside. Since wood is natural a natural product and it blends well in surroundings. The main type of wood is used for horse fencing is yellow pine wood and cedar woods. So the wood doesn't get bad or rots in rainy, winter any season. These woods are costly. Southern yellow pine is both economical and strong; the pressure-treatment process increases its endurance against rot and insect damage. Many companies offer a warranty on pressure-treated pine. Western red cedar and Eastern white cedar, each widely used in horse fencing, naturally resist rotting and warping. Oak is also a popular choice for horse fencing.

Vinyl fencing:

Vinyl fencing has multiple benefits. Vinyl is "maintenance free", aesthetically pleasing and has excellent durability. Vinyl can withstand the normal conditions associated with having horses corralled, such as rubbing and leaning. Horses tend not to crib on vinyl fencing. Vinyl does not rot, warp or splinter; this means that horses will be both safe and contained the vinyl woods are decorative and look good.

Fencing a plot of land is needed to keep livestock, animals and even children from getting in or out. Fencing was traditionally done by simply digging into the earth, and fixing up sticks or pickets joined together with horizontal ones to ensure sturdiness and use. But, in today's modern world, a fence is not just something used in old world villages. Many a modern home has a good fence around it, be it for practical purposes or just to add to the beauty of the place.

Wood Rail fences have so many uses

Wood rail fences generally made with cedar wood can be used around yards, pools, and gardens, for pet and poultry containment or simply to show your property line. The wooden boards that are put up horizontally could be flat or designed to resemble gothic structures, dog-ears or any style that you can think of.

Wood rail fence boards and posts

Wood rail fence boards are available with matching posts and post caps. These are easy to design, build and put up in any area with any specific dimensions. Cedar wood is used to make the rail fence boards and posts as they are most resistant to rotting and decay and unlike pressure treated or spruce wood, do not blacken or look rotted. Split posts and fence give the wood rail fence around the area an old village charm, but they are not of much use if children and small animals are to be kept in.

Wood rail fence styles

Wood rail fences are available in round, square, and split rail styles. Depending on what you want to contain within the fence line helps in deciding which style to use. Painting the wood rail fence gives it a rural look and adding decorative post caps adds a touch of modernism to it. Swing gates or single or double fence gates are also available in styles matching the wood rail fence style selected.

Installing a wood rail fence

Many professional contractors abound that design, build, at times at the site of the set up, and also install wood rail fences within a very short time span. These companies also give more information to the end user through the Internet. This enables a better choice and some companies also aid by providing online information about the prices by allowing the user to enter specifications and then calculate the cost involved.

Hand sewing gave way to machine sewn quilts, which had its takers not just in villages but towns and cities as well.

Rail fence quilt pattern:

The rail fence quilt pattern is a cut and sew block pattern. To make a simple rail fence quilt pattern, you can use say three colors that either complement or are in contrast to each other depending on your tastes. Take strips of red, white and blue colors that measure two and a half inch in breadth and about seven inches in length each. You need to take at least 35 strips of each color. Sew the strips with red on top, then white and then blue. This will now give you 35 blocks each about 6 inches broad. Place 5 blocks in such a manner that you have one block with vertical red, white and blue strips and one block with horizontal red, white and blue strips. Sew the first row of the rail fence quilt. For the next row of the rail fence quilt pattern, start with a horizontal strips block and then a vertical one. Make seven such rows for the rail fence quilt pattern. Join all the rows to make a rail fence quilt.

3-D rail fence quilt pattern:

For a 3-D rail fence quilt pattern, the blocks with strips are sewn along to plain blocks of the same size, such that every alternate block of the 3-D rail fence pattern is a strip block and a plain block next to it. Sew either five or six blocks together to make a row. Make many more such rows to sew a 3-D rail fence quilt to the size of your choice.

Split rail fence quilt pattern:

In the split rail fence quilt pattern, horizontal strips are sewn on to a block that has vertical strips of two alternating colors. Two horizontal strips at the same distance from the edge and themselves are sewn on to give the split rail fence quilt pattern effect. The next block has three such strips sewn on to them. Alternating blocks with two and three horizontal blocks are then sewn together for the split rail fence quilt pattern.

Split rail fences are some of the most painless fences to install. They are price effectual and do not have need of many tools to install. For that reason, you have to help it settle. This means tamping and re-tamping quite a lot of times after the posts have been installed. Nevertheless, you can use gravel to make this process a little easier.

Split rail fence:

The split rail fence is really known as the conventional American fence. From the most primitive times of the pioneers and the colonial period to the civil war and the gold rush, the split rail fence has been the representation of American apparent destiny since the time of Plymouth Rock. The explanation you see so many split rail fences is that they hardly ever break down and they are tremendously convenient. Time tested to put a stop to bug infestation; a cedar split rail fence has no enemies it cannot repel.

Natural Ambience:

Another grand characteristic of the split rail fence is its innate appeal. Once installed, there is diminutive need for preservation and safeguarding. You do not even have to paint it or stain it. Its natural organic radiance is a sufficient amount to satisfy anyone with at least an elementary knowledge of American custom. Most of the split rail fences are about four feet high and the support beams are ten feet long. On the other hand, depending on your needs, you can mix this up a little. This is the real beauty and splendor of split rail fences. The blueprint of a split rail fence is so straightforward; you can do almost anything you want with it while still keeping the design ethics unharmed.

Each rail and post comes in a slightly different size and shape.

The disadvantages of cedar rail fence:

It is typical to have to posts plumb after the ground settles around post so that the fence remains upright. This is especially true if the fence is installed in a wet area or it was wet when the fence was originally installed. The pouring gravel around the posts instead of backfilling with dirt will help prevent posts from leaning under the heavy weight of the rails. Fence requires a preservative for the longest-lasting performance, however most installations are never treated. Pricing for wood gates will be found with the other western red cedar materials. Smaller pedestrian size gates are made entirely of wood; they are available in widths 3', 4', x and 5' wide. A cross brace is installed (as pictured left) to help prevent sag. Typically these gates hang on red cedar posts with standard wood gate hardware (sold separately). Pricing for wood gates will be found with the other western red cedar materials. Larger wood gates are challenging since wood as a building material has its limitations. For these gates, we have designed a custom welded galvanized tubular frame to mount the wood to. White Cedar can be employed for residential and commercial fence applications.

The Cedar naturally resists rotting and insects, resulting in a durable, the properties of Cedar make it a dimensionally stable wood and one of the easiest to work with allowing almost anyone to install a wood fence from it. Sting fence system.

Why rail fence?

Rail fence is one of the most attractive fences that can be built on any property and it is also one of the easiest to make. A rail fence enhances the courtyard and its surroundings as it demarcates property lines without putting barriers. Though the rail fence was originally used to prevent livestock from straying, its timeless natural attraction has made it a much desired addition to many a household.

How to get a Rail Fence done.

The Rail Fence is made up of vertical posts with two or three holes to support horizontal rails and can be found at any of the neighborhood home and garden centers. The height of the fence is according to the height of the posts, and generally is about 4feet above the ground. There are two, maybe three horizontal rails. It would cost anything between 7$750-1500$ to build a rail fence which is about 80 to 11- feet in length. One could hire a good contractor to do it or even venture out by oneself. The material required, if you are using wood, is wooden logs, rails, gravel and tools. In case a person decided to do the rail fence by himself, it could save about 50 % of the cost as compared to getting it done contractually. Tools required are a post-hole digger, shovel, carpenter's level, tape measure, string and stakes.

New materials:

Rail fences made of bamboo are also becoming very popular for their grace and elegance. There are a lot of suppliers who give ready to fit bamboo rail fence, which also looks smart. Bamboo fences are typical of oriental design and can be seen at Japanese or Chinese restaurants or constructions. Mature bamboo poles are used here and these are claimed to be structurally much stronger than wooden logs. To tie the rails to the Poles, Black Twine can be used to add some extra effect. A bamboo rail fence would need some sort of a protective coating on it.

Plastics and Vinyl's:

Then there are vinyl's and recycled plastics also becoming very popular. The primary reasons the wide design and color variety these materials bring along. The vinyl and plastic rail fences are not very heavy also as compared to the wooden logs. However, it has to be said that, for sheer sturdiness, the wooden logs still score over everything else.

Before you undertake any fencing project, consult your property survey so you know exactly where your property begins and ends. In most areas, a building permit is required to build a fence, so check with your local building department to see if one is needed.

Mostly pole rail fences are used in farm places, bungalows. These pole fences are used in horse fencing. Pole fencing is of three types which are very decorative to look:

2- Rail fence
3- Rail fence
4- Rail fence

The 2- rail fence is most commonly used in decorative landscapes. And 3-Rail fencing is the most popular pole fence used due to its strength, longevity, and many uses. It is excellent for containing horses and other live stock. It is used as boarder fence, horse corals, horse arenas, and yard boundaries. Using the wire mesh allows you to keep your young children or domestic pets in, and unwanted critters out. The 4-Rail Pole fencing is most commonly used for roping arenas and horse corals. It has all of the benefits of the 3-Rail Pole fencing plus one extra horizontal rail. This puts the bottom rail closer to the ground and leaves less open space between each rail. The pole fence is the best thing to put around your house. If you are looking for a fence to crowd animals up against or need extra strength this might be the fence for you. These pole fences are used mostly in residential areas, swimming pools.

The uses of the pole fences:

The pole fences are used in big areas such as farmhouses, swimming pool and in the gardens, houses etc. Especially in olden days these types of poles were used in making of gates, backyard of the houses in gardens. These pole fences are found in villages and farm areas. Especially in the racing tracks of horses. The arranged rails on top of the farms are in a zigzag fashion until we had five on top of each other. In each corner we would take two short stakes and drive them in the corner on each side. We then took short pieces of wire and twisted them together at the top with a pair of pliers, then on each side of the short part of the stakes. The pole fences are nowadays coming in aluminum, designed woods for decorating the farm houses.

The rail tracks provide very smooth and hard surfaces on which the wheels of the train may roll with a minimum of friction. The Rail transport makes highly efficient use of space: a double-track rail line can carry more passengers or freight in a given amount of time than a four-lane road.

Safety and railway disaster:

The trains can travel at very high speed, are heavy, are unable to deviate from the track and require a great distance to stop. Possibilities for accidents include jumping the track (derailment), head-on collision with another train coming the opposite way and collision with an automobile at a level crossing also called a grade crossing. Rail operations also generate sound intensities capable of inducing noise health effects. The most important safety measure is railway signaling. The train whistles warn others of the presence of a train, trackside signals maintain the distances between trains. In Britain, vandalism is thought responsible for about half of rail accidents. In Urban, city, or town planning is the discipline of land use planning which deals with the physical, social, and economic development of metropolitan regions, municipalities and neighborhoods. The Other professions deal in more detail with a smaller scale of development, namely architecture, landscape architecture and urban design. The Regional planning deals with a still larger environment, at a less detailed level. Extreme weather, flood, or other emergencies can often be greatly mitigated with secure evacuation routes and emergency operations centers. These are relatively inexpensive and many consider them a reasonable precaution for any urban space. Many cities will also have planned, built safety features, such as levees, retaining walls, and shelters.

Are you looking to mend your Fences??

Let's try and find out something about the spilt rail fences. A fence serves a few purposes, apart from being a protective barrier safeguarding your premises, it also is a style statement of the premises owners. One can have many fencing options to choose from, but the good old Split Rail fence remains an all time favorite. A Split Rail fence is made of wooden logs and is also called as a log fence. It is widely used in areas where wood is abundantly available. Most farmhouses use the Split Rail fencing system.

Cedar is mostly used for the Split Rail Fences and logs are placed on over the other and zigzag also, to give better support. It is very easy to repair and re-assemble. The wood is always available in case you find a better use for it elsewhere.

The Split Rail fence is strong, very strong, and simple and a practical solution to our fencing needs. The commonly used Cedar Spilt Rail fence is appealing and very easy to upkeep. In fact there is hardly any maintenance required on this. Being in its natural colors itself is quite attractive and hence needs no painting.

The Installation

A spilt Rail fence is just too simple to put together. You need to put the vertical columns about 4 feet in height and about 10 feet apart with 3 or 4 support beams. You might even have cross support beams for extra security. Just a sit is easy to install, the Split Rail fence needs an extra bit of care, initially that is. A little bit of effort is required to keep it tamped regularly till it settles down on its won. Using some gravel to do it will help fix the fence sooner and more securely. Farms prefer the Split Rail fence, as it is good against the cattle and horses. However, the smaller animals can always squeeze in.

New developments

Due to the immense popularity of the Split Rail fences, and the declining availability and rising costs of wood, Vinyl is fast catching as an attractive alternate to wood. The wide variety of colors, designs and being lightweight, make vinyl a popular choice. Many designers have been able to come with very creative patterns in Spilt Rail fences made of Vinyl. The fact that vinyl is all weather friendly and needs absolutely no maintenance has also propped up demand for Split Rail fence in Vinyl. The Vinyl Split Rail fence can be said to be a wonderful blend of tradition and modern elegance.

With more and more option in materials likely to open up in future, one thing is certain, The Split Rail fence will continue to be an all time favorite, wood or no wood.
