Most of the orchids are generally required to be repotted once in every two years. The orchids gradually deteriorates due to various factors. If repotting of orchids is not done then the bark or moss becomes decomposed and packed. Under these circumstances the roots are not properly aerated and the drainage becomes blocked so there is too much standing moisture, and then the plant eventually dies from asphyxiation and root rots. Ideally, orchids should be repotted immediately after flowering for better results.

The various tools required for repotting of orchids are 1 pair of clippers, 1 large bucket, 1 blowtorch, Pots, Bamboo Stakes and Orchid Ties.

Selecting a New Pot:
Orchids can be grown in any kind of container which has a hole for drainage at the bottom of the container as the ventilation around the bottom of the pot is vital to the plants well being. Water should not be allowed to stand at the bottom of the container. One can use the same pot which may be re-used after the existing decomposed orchid bark has been discarded. But the used pot should be disinfected with Physan 20. Otherwise, one should always pick a pot that is just slightly larger than the earlier one.

Potting Mix
The potting mix is always determined by the size and type of orchid to be grown. Phalaenopsis, Cattleya, Dendrobium and Vanda should be grown in Medium Orchid Bark Mix. Paphiopedilum, Miltonia, Odontoglossums and Oncidium are always required to be potted in Fine Orchid Bark Mix.

Removal From Pot
Removal of the plant from its pot should be done in a manner that will cause the least trauma to the roots.

Sterilize Tools
In order to prevent the transmission of bacterial and viral infections always sterilize the tools prior to use.

Trimming
for trimming an orchid always cut off all the dead roots which are generally hollow and soft. Healthy roots are those roots which are firm and creamy white

Repotting
If the division is not required then place the plant to be repotted in a pot that is slightly larger than the preceding one.

Dividing
In order to divide always sterilize the cutting tools with Physan 20 or flame the tool with a blowtorch. Always let the sterile tool cool down before using it on the plant

Rooting Care
For the rooting care always dip the plant in Rootone (Rooting Hormone) or Dip and grow to help the stimulation of the new root growth.

There are over a thousand discovered species of Dendrobium which makes them the second largest orchid genus in the world after Bulbophyllum. The shape and form of the stems and leaves of Denrobiums vary but the pattern of flowers is quite constant. Dendrobiums come from South East Asia, Northern India, islands off the East coast of New Guinea, Australia and Polynesia. The latitude where they grow is around the Equator and this territory is always hot at sea level without seasonal variation. However, the orchids from north of the Tropic of Cancer and south of the Tropic of Capricorn are used to a ranging climate having cold, dry winters and warm, wet summers.

The Dendrobium orchids are classified into three types:
1. Nobile type or Himalayan orchids.
2. New Guinea orchids.
3. Australian orchids.

1. Nobile Dendrobiums:

They are easy to grow but are difficult to bloom regularly. The flowers are showy and multi colored with colors like white, pink and purple, and the lip is often marked in contrasting colors. Others are yellow and brown, while the recently introduced hybrids have all the colors of the rainbow. The Himalayan climate is almost like a warmer Switzerland with cold but dry winters.
Requirements:
During November to February daytime temperatures can drop to 40 – 45 when you should not water or feed but give plenty of light and air movement. During March to June there are warmer and moister conditions when buds develop and new growths appear. Then, water less until the new shoots have grown roots. From June to November during the monsoon period which is warm and very wet, give a low strength, high nitrogen feed. Dry and cool the plants during winter so as to get flowers.

2. New Guinea Dendrobiums:

The climate changes with altitude and mountainous regions have cool, misty nights and warm, bright days. Do not allow the orchids of these regions to dry out completely and feed often with diluted fertilizers. The river valleys between the mountain ranges are warm and wet and some of the most exotic of the New Guinea orchids grow here. They need generous feeding and watering.

3. Australian Dendrobiums:

Dendrobium Kingianum and its near relatives are the easiest to grow orchids. The pseudobulbs have a length from 5cm. to 30cm. tall and are thin and tough. The leaves are narrowly and the flowers appear in late winter and early spring. These orchids can be removed and potted separately after they have developed good roots or they can be left on the parent plant. They require intermediate temperatures and drier conditions than other Dendrobiums. Water them once a week and water generously during the spring and autumn with dilute feed.

Vanda's orchids are those fascinating orchids that may be grown with relative ease. Vanda orchids are monopodial. The growth of vandal orchids arises from the crown of the plant. Flowers of vandal orchids are available in superbly rich colors also including blue, red, orange and yellow. The flower spikes of vandal are the one which usually carry 8 to 10 blooms, which arises from the base of the leaves and last for several weeks.

Lighting
Vanda orchids requires plenty of light. The direct morning and late afternoon sun can be easily tolerated by Vanda, provided the exposure occurs gradually. The Vanda plants are required to adapt slowly to the any increase in lighting. Always provide full morning sun whenever possible.

Temperature
Vanda orchids are always preferred to be kept on the warmer side. These plants thrive when the nighttime temperatures are between 55 to 70F and daytime temperatures between 65 to 95F.

Watering:
The basic rule of thumb for watering should be as followed with the vandal orchids, that is, more heat more water, less heat less water! Depending upon the temperature, Vandas which are grown in pots should be watered about once or twice a week. During the summer, these plants may require to be watered every 4-5 days. Those Vandas which are grown in baskets require watering often. Plants are required to be watered daily during the summer. Vandas should always dry out in between watering. Always try to water the plants early in the day so that the foliage will be dry by nightfall. In order to prevent bacterial and fungal disease always use Physan 20 once a month.

Humidity
Vandas generally prefer 60 to 80% humidity. A high humidity is very essential during the growing season which ranges from early spring through late fall. During the summers the watering should be supplemented with daily misting of the leaves.

Fertilizer
Vandas are heavy feeders of fertilizers. They should be fertilized on a regular basis

Potting
Vandas may easily be grown in pots. The Vandas which are grown in pots should be repotted once every two years. Repotting should be done in the spring season.

The orchid family is one of the largest families in the flowering plants kingdom. It has more than 20,000 species worldwide. Orchids are generally found throughout the world ranging from the tropics to the subarctic zone. However, the orchid-richest areas are generally found in the tropics and subtropics. Orchids are also found well represented in the Southern African region; in total there are around 467 species in 53 genera are indigenous in this region, out of which 65% are endemic which comes to almost three times as many orchids as grow in Europe.
There are people who frequently ask what distinguishes an orchid from any other plant? There are several characteristics which would help people to distinguish an orchid from any other plant. We generally comment only on those which are easy to distinguish just by seeing.

The most important characteristic of an orchid is that, it is irregular or zygomorphic flowers. The perianth about it is that it is usually clearly divided into an upper and a lower half. The perianth always has six lobes which are often arranged in two whorls of three. The lip or labellum of an orchid is usually a prominent and highly complicated lobe. A significant exception is our African genus Disa, which has a simple and rather insignificant lip.

Most of the orchid flowers twist through 180 just before they open. This movement of an orchid is termed as resupination which is necessary as the lip is originally developed on the upper side. After the resupination it is positioned on the lower side which is much more advantageous for successful pollination.

Unlike most of the other plants the pollen grains of an orchid stick together and form masses called pollinia. The ovary of an orchid, when cut open, contains numerous tiny ovules, which in the mature capsule develops into dust-like seeds. It has a symbiotic relationship with fungi that live in their roots, called mycorrhiza.
The orchids generally grow in a wide variety of various habitats, including bushveld, savanna, karooid scrub, thorn scrub, fynbos and grassland, same as in many other plant groups, the Western Cape is where most of the species occur. If you want to grow Southern African orchids, cultivation notes are also available with the descriptions of some of the genera. Most of the African orchids are terrestrial.

Orchids require regular fertilization to grow and flower properly, but too much fertilizer can damage them. The best types of fertilizers for orchids are water-soluble types of fertilizer and they are easy to use. Orchids growing in barks of trees require a fertilizer with a higher content of nitrogen, such as 30-10-10 or 15-5-5. Mounted orchids and potted orchids grow well with even fertilizer ratios, such as 20-20-20. During autumn, a "bloom-booster" type formula can be used which has a higher phosphorus content such as 10-30-20.

Use soluble fertilizers once a month and a dilute fertilizer solution can be used to water plants weekly during the growing season. Each month, plain water should be used to rinse any accumulated fertilizer salts out of the pot. When the foliage growth stops after flowering, reduce fertilizer applications until new leaf production starts again.

The nitrogen source is an important consideration in selecting the base for the fertilizer. The term "base" is used because it may be necessary to use other components to create a better balance of nutrients. Among different organic sources of nitrogen, feather meal works well with orchids. Feather meal decomposes slowly and thus provides a long lasting source.

Most forms of phosphorus are harmful to beneficial microbes. The molecular relationship of di-calcium phosphate seems to be of the harmless form and di-calcium phosphate is also the form used for orchids. It comes in granulated form that can be mixed into the feather meal base.

The third important nutrient content is potash. Potash is highly soluble but a vital component that easily seeps out of solid fertilizer applications before the other components are used. Liquid sources of potash can be sprayed in the form of potash soaps. Greensand is mined from sea beds and provides potash and just about every micronutrient.

Fertilizers are generally rated by the amount of the three "NPK" components. The NPK ratio is a reflection of what is immediately available to the plant. Chemical fertilizers or inorganics are potent and of high value and they do provide high quantities of the three basic components because they are soluble salts. With organics much is not immediately available to the orchids.

A list of all fragrant orchid species would be really very gigantic, as it would always be growing due to the presence of new hybrids registered practically every week. Anyways a small list of orchids definitely-not-complete list of fragrant orchids is:

Aerangis: Most of these species are small in size and has evening fragrance.

Aeranthes: Only a few species have fragrance.

Aerides: Most of these have very good fragrance, they are tall, and have lanky growth and roots.

Ancistrochilum rothschildianum: These orchids are small and deciduous in winter.

Brassavola: Most of these orchids are very night-scented, which also includes the well-known Brassavola nodosa, or "lady of the night" orchid.

Brassia: They are huge and are spiderlike flowers.

Brassidium: They are popular scented brassia hybrids.

Brassocattleyas: These are the ones which crosses between brassavola and cattleya, most of them are scented and some of them are intensely scented.

Brassolaocattleyas: These are the ones which are the crosses of three different genuses and most of them are scented.

Catasetum: They are large, deciduous orchids which bears male or female flowers. Various species are fragrant, including those which belongs to callosum, pileatum and tenebrosum and many well-known hybrids with other genuses are likewise fragrant.

Cattleya: The classic orchid and the most fragrant species are said to be generally bicolor, dowiana, iricolor, labiata, maxima, mossiae, schilleriana, and warscewiczii. Literally out of thousands of these hybrids, many are scented, some of them are intensely fragrant

Clowesia: These are the plants which lose their leaves in the winter and most of these species are scented.

Dendrobium: These are the very popular genus of orchid. Many of them have tall canes and lose their leaves in winter. Most of these species are scented and the popular species include kingianum, loddigesii, monoliforme, nobile, parishii and speciosum

Dendrochilum: Most of these are scented, with chains of tiny flowers, including cobbianum, glumacaeum, magnum.
Gongora: Most of these species are small and are highly scented. These are the flowers which are often short-lived.

Haraella odorata: These are the most popular fragrant miniature orchid on the Orchid Forum.

Sedirea japonica: These are extremely fragrant small or long orchids generally cultivated in Japan.
Vanda: These are the ones with big, long aerial roots, harder to grow in the North region and the smaller scented species include cristata, denisonia, suavis, and tessellata.

Zygopetalum: Most of these species are highly scented and are usually found as complex hybrids and many of them also smell fantastic.

These are those types of orchids which are the most sumptuous and exotic of all and are generally chosen for corsages.
In the habitat there are about 50 species of Cattleya .Right from the Central America, growing through the Amazon region to the south of Brazil. Their various distinctive flowers and the tendency of these plants to grow in large colonies means that they have been vigorously over-collected and the present status of many cattleya orchids is endangered.

These cattleya orchids produce strong 'pseudobulbs' topped with one or more leathery leaves. Every year a dormant bud at the base grows into a new shoot, which thickens to produce the current year's pseudobulb. The cattleya flowers arise from the tip of the current year's growth and come in a range of colours from white and pink to green and purple. Some of these only flower twice yearly.

Hybrids

Hybrids have been bred over the years and many of which are easy to grow and easy to flower. Over 40 other a genus which has been bred into Cattleyas and notably among them Sophronitis has been used to introduce scarlet and Brassovola for the frilly lip.

Temperature and Humidity

The minimum night temperatures of 10 -15 C which depends on the plants' origin but the growth in summer is rapid at temperatures up to 26 C. Incase of a humid atmosphere propelled by a fan is beneficial.

Light

In the greenhouses, the normal maximum is 50% of the full daylight or 2000-3000 foot candles. In case of hot weather always shade sufficiently to ensure that the leaves are cool to the touch. Incase you are growing in the home always give a bright situation but not direct sunlight which may be done behind a net curtain right from April to September. These can also develop into good conservatory plants as long as summer shade and good air movement can be provided.

Watering and Fertilising

Right from March to September the compost should never be allowed to dry out fully. Always water twice weekly and always fertilise fortnightly with a recommended orchid fertiliser. From October to February, no fertiliser is required, but always waters the plants when the compost appears dried out. It is always better to underwater as the plants can stand neglect more than over watering!

Facts about Ghost Orchids:
Kingdom – Plantae
Phylum – Anthophyta
Class – Liliopsida
Order – Orchidales
Family – Orhidaceae
Genus – Epipogium

Size of Ghost Orchids:
Stem length: Ranging from 5cm to 20 cm
Size of flowers: Approximately 15 – 20 mm (measured vertically)

Status of Ghost Orchids:
This orchid is specially protected in Britain under Schedule 8 of the Wildlife and Countryside Act, 1981.

Description of Ghost Orchids:
According to what its common name suggests, the ghost orchid is a mysterious plant. It spends a larger part of its life underground tends to disappear and suddenly reappear unexpectedly in an area. Also, this orchid certainly does have a ghostly quality because it completely lacks chlorophyll, the green pigment found in almost all plants. This is why it has a pale and waxy appearance. The stem is translucent with a slight tinge of pink and with many reddish streaks. The leaves are reduced to small scales and lie at the base of the plant. Higher up on the plant they take the form of one or two sheaths and fit snugly around the stem. Pale flowers are produced in quantity ranging from one to four which hang on fine stalks and are spotted with violet color. The ghost orchid species has a long-lived underground storage organ known as rhizome which looks like coral.

Range of Ghost Orchids:
In Britain, it has been found typically in Oxfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Herefordshire, and Shropshire. Globally, its range extends from north and central Europe south to the Pyrenees, the north of Greece and Crimea. It also occurs in Siberia, the Caucasus and Himalaya.

Habitat of Ghost Orchids:
Ghost Orchids are typically found growing in beech (Fagus), or more rarely, oak (Quercus) woodlands in deep leaf-litter or on rotten stumps where there is very little or no ground flora.

Biology of Ghost Orchids:
Ghost orchids are saprophytic, which means they obtain nutrients from dead organic matter. They lack the green pigment chlorophyll because they do not photosynthesize. The underground rhizomes can live for a very long time, but they do not produce stems every year. The flowers are pollinated by various bumblebees and other insects, but seeds are very rarely produced.

Cymbidium orchids rank as one of the best known and widely popular of all orchids. The wild varieties of Cymbidium are found growing naturally in China, Japan, the Himalayas, South East Asia and Australia. Cymbidium orchids are one of the oldest cultivated orchids, and there is evidence that they were grown in China almost 2500 years ago in records from 500 BC at the time of Confucius. They are one of the easiest orchids to cultivate and flower year after year if they are cared for.

Temperature and Humidity Requirements:

Greenhouses or conservatories are suited for these plants where night temperatures above 46F can be maintained. During autumn, winter and spring, night temperatures should not exceed 55F. They can also be grown at home, but for flower shoots they require cool nights during the spring and summer months. Humidity should be ranging from 50% to 75%.

Air Movement Requirements:

Good air movement is beneficial for growth of Cymbidiums. Ventilation of the greenhouse or a strong fan to circulate the greenhouse air is also beneficial.

Light Requirements:

Strong light at 2500-3000 ft candles is ideal for them. In a greenhouse, 50%-60% shading is needed during the summer months to prevent leaf burn and overheating. During summer, early morning sun is ideal, but shade should be provided against strong sunlight.

Water Requirements:

The plants should not be allowed to dry out and always keep the compost moist. Normally, watering once in a week is sufficient but, during the summer months it is advisable to water twice weekly. It is wise to water in the morning to avoid the possible loss of new growths. If possible, use rainwater.

Fertilizing Requirements:

Use a well-balanced fertilizer throughout spring and summer.

Potting and Dividing:

The best time for repotting and dividing Cymbidiums is between the end of February and until the end of June. Never over pot them. Only do repotting into plant pots where there is enough room for the next year's growth. Do not water for at least three weeks and moisten with a hand-spray just to keep the leaves, bulbs and compost from drying. Start watering when the newly potted divisions start to root.

The estimates of orchid vary on the number of orchid species. Whatever the estimate one uses, the orchid family is the largest or one of the largest plant families in the plant kingdom. The plant taxonomists vary in their estimates because what constitutes a species and genus is often a matter of opinion.

Orchids are one of the largest families of flowering plants in the world, with more than 20,000 species. Orchids are also easily found in the most diverse, varying widely in their size, shape, color, texture, and decorative markings.
We are extremely proud to have in our orchid collection, some of the world's rarest Phalaenopsis species of the orchids such as the Phal ambiences 'flava' and the Phal appendiculata.

Phal amboinensis 'flava',

The rarest albino variety of the Phal amboinensis 'yellow'. It is also one of the rarest of the Phalaenopsis species that not many, even amongst the expert breeders and the die hard collectors, knew about its existence. This particular Phal amboinensis 'flava' 'David Lim' was discovered about 30 year ago. It has an enormous potential and a good candidate as a stud plant for crossing and hybridizing, producing green and yellow progenies. Progenies from this parentage are likely potential award winners.

The two progenies had Phal amboinensis 'flava' 'David Lim' parentage. One can easily compare the same crosses, the common Phal Ambonosa and Phal Princess Kaiulani with ordinary Phal amboinensis parent. The smallest and extremely rarest is the Phal appendiculata (flower is about 10mm in size) which was earlier thought to be extinct. It is another rare species of this genus. Ever since discovered, reported and published long time ago, not much report have been heard or seen for many decades. It is a must for orchid breeders and collectors who aspire to breed and cross Phalaenopsis species. The germination rate of this orchid is very low.

Another species is the unusual Phal speciosa varieties tetraspis in which each flower is unique and have visually very different markings despite being from the same spike. It will always keep you in suspense when it blooms, not knowing what's coming next. The normal Phal speciosa variety tetraspis is generally white with light spots of purple.

Orchids are the perennial flowering plants which belong to the genus known as "Orchidaceae". Orchids are the most passionately cultivated flowers in the world and also have been symbols for the exotic and mysterious and signify romance, extravagance and the desire for intimacy.

Orchids are some of the most bizarre and diverse plants on earth, and they generally grow in virtually every colour and every shape. Orchids are also the masters of sexual deception.

There are various ways of planting orchids.
Way of Planting Orchids

Inorder to let the orchids grow well all material provide must be well aeration and drainage. Take for example pot, slabs of tree trunk, coconut shell, etc.

Various Potting Medium:-

Various materials such as broken bricks, charcoal, coconut husks, etc are all very good for planting as to provide the plants to be firmly anchored.

Some of the orchids are required to be shelter to grow well. Few example of these are the cattley, Phalenopsis and the Dendrobium. Unlike Vanda, Renanthera, and Morakar as they always require direct sunlight.

All the seedlings will always grow better under shade as it always helps to protect the hard heating of the raindrops.

Most of the commercial plants are required to be replanted after every 5 years as then plants and flowers are no longer strong and healthy.

Fertilizer:-

Orchids require more food during their active growth and during their different growth stage.

1) The inorganic chemicals:: 67 (many other brand) and:: 63 should be taken and then dissolved in water. After dissolving it should be sprayed onto the plant, both on the root and leaves of the plants twice a month.

2) The organic Fertilizers such as: Animal Dune is to be applied little at a time but always do it frequently.

Watering:-
Watering an orchid does not require hard and fast rule for when to water. There is no specific timing for watering but you can kill the plant by over watering. So always remember not to over water the plant. Always water the plants depending upon the condition of the environment.

There are various fringed flowers and one of them is the Western Prairie Fringed Orchid (Platanthera praeclara).

Western Prairie Fringed Orchid (Platanthera praeclara)
Status:
The present status is that it is threatened as per the 54 FR 39857; September 28, 1989. Its critical habitat has not been designated yet.

Description:
The western prairie fringed orchid usually arises from a fleshy tuber. It generally grows from 1.25 to 3 feet tall (38-85 cm). Each of these plants can have up to two dozen or more flowers arranged in a stalk. The western prairie fringed orchid is distinguished from the eastern prairie fringed orchid (Platanthera leucophaea) due to its slightly larger flowers, petal shape, and longer nectar spur.

Life History:
The western prairie fringed orchid is often a long-lived perennial. It emerges in the month of May and blooms in the month of June or in July further north. These flowers are fragrant at night and are pollinated by large sphinx moths.

Habitat:
The western prairie fringed orchid is a plant belongs to the tallgrass prairie and requires direct sunlight for growth. It is mostly found in the moist habitats or sedge meadows. The Western prairie fringed orchids have persisted in the areas that have been lightly grazed, periodically burned, or regularly mowed. It is not yet understood how these activities affect the survival of the plant. It may be due to the removal of dead grass mulch is beneficial, but heavy grazing is detrimental.

Distribution:
Historically, the western prairie fringed orchid was first found in tallgrass prairies west of the Mississippi River. It also occurred from extreme southern Canada south to northeast Oklahoma. In Oklahoma as per the historical records of 1975, exist for Craig and Rogers Counties. Currently, extant populations of the orchid are also found in Iowa, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, and North Dakota.

Causes of Decline:
The major factor for the decline of the western prairie fringed orchid has been the conversion of native prairie to croplands. Fire suppression, overgrazing, and habitat fragmentation also have contributed majorly to the decline of the species.

Other information:
The western prairie fringed orchid was described as a distinct species, separate from the eastern prairie fringed orchid in 1986. Both of them are threatened species.

For many years people thought that orchids were 'greenhouse only' plants. Some varieties of orchids are difficult to grow, and therefore meant only for greenhouse culture, but there are many other varieties which if given appropriate conditions and care grow well in a home environment. Quite contrary to popular belief all orchids do not require warm temperatures; in fact many orchids do better with cool temperatures ranging from 60 to 70 degrees in the day and about 55 degrees at night. Since orchids are quite expensive as compared to most of the house plants, one should always make the choice wisely, and according to the conditions which one will be able to provide.

Basic care and requirements of orchids:

Most orchids that are suited for home culture are the ones that grow in nature perched high on the trees, clinging to branches or in the trunk apex of the trees – known as epiphytic jungle plants. They derive nutrition from the air, rain, and any decaying vegetation that the roots contact. For growing these orchids successfully you will need to duplicate the native conditions as much as possible.

1. Humidity: Orchids need a high humidity of at least 50%. Therefore it is almost necessary for the pots to be positioned above a tray filled with pebbles and water but the orchid pots themselves shouldn't set directly on the pebbles because drainage is an essential element too. Misting the orchids can be beneficial too, but this should be done only when there is sufficient light and air circulation so that the orchids can dry before night.

2. Watering: Orchids should be watered approximately once a week when the soil becomes dry, but they must never be allowed to remain wet or soggy for more than one or two days at a time. The best water to use is the one which has been allowed to sit for 24 hours so as to allow the chemicals to dissipate. One should feed orchids with water soluble 'orchid fertilizer' every two weeks during the growing season.

3. Light: The light requirements for orchids vary with the types of plants. About four hours of sunlight is required during the winter months if you want orchids to thrive and bloom. In the absence of natural sun, use of fluorescent 'grow lights' can provide necessary light.

4. Medium of potting: It is recommend using ready made orchid potting mixes which are available at most garden centers or orchid growers themselves. One should use mixes mainly because of the ease and availability. Also it is fairly inexpensive and is blended to the proper texture and acidity. If you want to make your own mix, you can do so by mixing components like osmunda fiber, ground tree fern stem, or ground bark.

Its origin is from the indigenous to the tropical and semitropical regions, such as Asia, South and Central America. Their size varies from a few millimeters, some so small that they can be viewed with the microscope. These are called miniature orchids. The tallest can grow up to 6mt.Here we are talking about Blue Orchids, which is different species in the orchid family. Their beauty lies in its bright blue color.

Temperature To Be Considered:

Fluctuation in temperature is necessary. Durning the day when the temperature is high they have to produce energy in the form of carbohydrates and store it in the night when the temperature drops. The night temperature should be 60-62 degrees F, for ideal growth. Below that it may harm the plant. Too cold water can harm the plant.

Types of Blue Orchids:

1) Blue Vanda: This blue was discovered in 1837 on the kashi hills of India. These flowers are usually 10-13inches tall and have 4-6flowers, which bloom for up to 4-5 weeks. They grow best in cool air where there is regular misting. They are allergic to ethylene gas, so it is best to keep them away from fruits, vegetables.
2) Potted Dendrobium Indian Blue: The most gorgeous looking blue orchid among all. Its rare shades of deep purple blue are very attractive. For people who love royal colors this could be the perfect. The plant is 2-3feet tall and has 7-12 buds shipped in. It blooms to about 2.5inches in diameter. This slim cane blue orchid is a favorite among many orchid growers.
3) Dendrobium: In ancient palaces this flower was used for offering to the gods and for the welcome of guests. If proper care is taken these flowers can last for weeks. These blue orchids can be placed anywhere in the house to enhance the beauty .Its rich deep blue color will give a joyous atmosphere to your guests.
4) Sansai Blue Vanda Mokara: These orchids are created recently; they are hybridized from the Indian blue Vanda. These blooms have an enchanting smell of wild berries. Very delicate in their looks. They bloom particularly in the afternoon and early evening.

Here we saw different types of blue orchids. There are too many of these species to be covered in one topic. The beauty lies in the eyes of the beholder; there are many such who understand the value of these blue beauties. Their elegant and magnificent deep blue shades create magic in the surrounding.

Phalaenopsis

Light: They grow and bloom well in a bright window or a room with little or no sun.
Temperature: They grow well under warmer conditions.
Water: Watering is very important, as they have no water storage capacity.
Humidity: They require humidity level between 60 to 80 percent.
Fertilizers: Apply a balanced fertilizer or a slow-release solid fertilizer.

Vanda

Light: A vandaceous plant needs high light conditions.
Temperature: About 60 to 75 degrees at night and 85 to 95 degrees during the day are recommended.
Water: Water should be given frequently.
Humidity: Provide them with 70 to 80 percent humidity.
Fertilizers: Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer on a regular basis.

Oncidium

Light: Oncidium that is grown indoors will require less light.
Temperature: About 60 to 65 degrees at night and 80 to 90 degrees during the day.
Water: They should be watered thoroughly and allowed to dry before watering again.
Humidity: About 40 to 60 percent, as oncidiums do not require humid conditions.
Fertilizers: Use a balanced fertilizer during their growing period.

Miltonia

Light: Miltonias require high light conditions.
Temperature: About 50-65 degrees during the night and 75-85 degrees during the day.
Water: Water them heavily and evenly during their growing period.
Humidity: Humidity level of 60 to 70 percent is required.
Fertilizers: Fertilize regularly using a balanced fertilizer.

Cattleya

Light: One of the most important requirements is bright light.
Temperature: They require temperatures from 50-55 degrees at night to 70-100 degrees during the day.
Water: They need to dry out thoroughly between waterings.
Humidity: A humidity level of approximately 60 percent.
Fertilizers: As with all orchids, follow a regular feeding program.

Dendrobium

Light: Bright lighting is a necessary element for them to bloom.
Temperature: They require night temperatures of 60 to 65 degrees and day temperatures of 80 to 100 degrees.
Water: They need moisture when they are young and vigorously growing.
Humidity: A humidity level of about 60 percent.
Fertilizers: Dendrobiums are fast-growing plants and should be fed on a regular schedule.

Phaius

Light: Their leaves are very wide, so give them less light.
Temperature: A temperature of 50 to 95 degrees is ideal.
Water: Keep them evenly moist at all times.
Humidity: The humidity level required is about 60 percent.
Fertilizers: Use a solid, slow-release fertilizer.

Bulbophyllum

Light: They are low-light requirement plants.
Temperature: They require temperatures running from 55 to 95 degrees.
Watering: They grow well with watering twice a day.
Humidity: A humidity level of 60 percent is ideal.
Fertilizers: Use a balanced fertilizer twice a month.

The various factors which are required to grow orchids are:

Light:
The ideal place in the home for growing orchids is a place which has a bright window, free from drafts, where your plants can receive indirect sunlight both in the morning and in the afternoon. (A south window is recommended for the best result.)During winters, always give orchids all the light possible. The light intensity for growing orchid should be between 1500 and 2000 foot candles the equivalent to a bright south-facing window. With the provision of an extra large windows or especially intense sunlight, the light may be adjusted downward by moving orchid plants 18 to 36 inches away from the window. Many orchids can also be grown in a greenhouse or outdoors.

Artificial Light:
If you neither have a greenhouse nor the proper windowsill conditions, then the fluorescent lighting provides a very good result. You can also grow and flower many types of orchids in the darkest basement or the shadiest apartment with the addition of just one shop light.

Humidity:
The evaporation of water from the pebbles provides humidity to the plant. The pebbles also make the growing area more attractive, with the assurance of a good drainage system. One should always moist the plants with distilled water as the tap water can lead to salt deposits on the leaves.

Watering:
Watering is the most important factor for growing any plant. When you grow the plants in the pots suspended in the air, they will generally dry out more rapidly than in the bench grown plants and will need watering more frequently. Orchids which are potted in the bark requires more frequent watering as compared than those in most other potting media. Orchids can be grouped into three categories as per their moisture requirements.

Fertilization:
While fertilizing the plants growing in osmunda, bark or peat/bark mixes, always use a complete liquid fertilizer with a 20-20-20 analysis, or a 30-10-10 orchid-special fertilizer. Always apply the fertilizer in place of a normal water application.

Orchids belong to the huge varities of plants called Orchidaceae. In ancient times orchids were used as the main ingredients of love potions. They belong to the most colourful variety of the family of plants. Orchids add grace and charm to the room. They have a different set of cultural needs but they adapt well to the average home. They are the most highly developed of the plant family with over thirty thousand species. Some Orchids are fragrant and the scent is highly variable. Many orchids have familiar Aromas such as chocolate, raspberry, lilac or citrus. They rely on insects for pollination.

White Orchids grow in abundance in Kurseong.Following some simple rules makes White Orchids easy to grow. Like all other plants White Orchids need water, fertilizer, light and air. They are found high above the jungle floor, in the canopy of trees. They are grown mostly in fine orchid bark mix or medium orchid bark mix. They must be grown in pots with good drainage and they must be watered once or twice a week. The thumb rule for watering should be more heat more water; less heat less water. They must be repotted immediately after flowering. Common pests associated with White Orchids are scale and spider mites too. They benefit from fresh air circulation and in the natural habitat orchids get excellent air circulation, which helps prevent bacterial and fungal diseases. Cold drafts from coming into the contact with plants should be avoided. They would also need to be protected from snails that would devour the flowers and shred the new leaves of the plant.

Thus orchids can be decorated, arranged and maintained for the beautiful look or the special look or special occasions for that matter. Thus white orchids or any orchids for that matter need to be taken good care tenderly for the best results. The orchids need to be grown under the supervision of certified growers for the beauty of the magnificent orchids to be unrivaled.

Modern history of the Vanilla orchid had its origin right in the 16th century. The Aztec Indians were the one who in Mexico discovered that the seemingly inedible fruit or bean of a tropical orchid, when cured for months in heat and humidity resulted in the exotic aroma.

History:

Vanilla was not only considered to be a wonderful flavoring for foods and beverages, but right from the 16th to 19th centuries it was also considered to be an aphrodisiac and also to have therapeutic values, ranging from aiding digestion and preventing headaches to counteracting poisons and bites. The Aztecs referred these brown beans as the "tlilxochitl"(tea-so-shill), the Aztec word for "Black Flower", and also required the Totonac Indians who produced these orchids to give some of the finest pods to the emperor of Montezuma as a tax payment.

The Vanilla Orchid is often grown for the curiosity of more than the flower. The
fleshy green leaves which grow in a zig zag pattern clinging to the bark by aerial roots are formed by each leaf node. The plant can also climb up to 30 feet tall, as the mature plant which produces the flower and the seed pods. The seed pods are often dried and used for the vanilla flavoring in many food products. The blooms are of a yellowish-green color with a yellowish-orange labellum resembling the Cattleya flower. As the Vanilla is vining, a stake or trellis should always be used for extra support.

The various requirements for growing Vanilla Orchids are:

Light:

The Vanilla orchid generally prefers a partially shaded location. An east or west window location will definitely work if the plant is shaded from the intense mid-day sun.

Temperature:

Generally warm temperatures are extremely beneficial for the VanillaOrchid. During the daytime the temperatures should be ideally kept between 80-85. During the night, temperatures ranging from 60-65 are generally preferred.

Water:

The Vanilla orchid particularly is a tropical plant and prefers a moistclimate. If the soil is too wet, the roots may rot, if they are kept toodry, then they can shrivel or even burn especially in the hot weather. Humidityshould always be kept high which can be easily obtained by using a humidifier, ahumidity tray or a tray of pebbles and water which is kept under the pot.

Fertilizers:

The vanilla orchids are vigorous growers so they may require morefood as compared with other more slow growing orchids. A balanced fertilizer(20-20-20) is generally recommended with less feedings during the winter. Since vanillas orchids do not produce flowers until they reach maturity, therefore a bloom booster is not important.

If you are passionate about orchids here's some information on orchids. There are many varieties of orchids, with more than 20,000 species found in nature worldwide. Orchids belonging to a huge family called Orchidaceae comprised of more than 800 genera, around 25,000 known species and more than 110,000 registered hybrids – the numbers that continue to rise. Captivating, exotic and amazingly colorful, an orchid plant adds grace to any room.

How to grow Orchids at home:

Many orchids are rewarding indoor plants. Orchids are quite tough unlike what most people think and are extremely adaptable. Orchids do not grow in soil and potting an orchid in soil is actually kills it. Most orchids in the wild are not rooted in the ground but attached by thick roots to the sides of trees and on branches. Clinging to the bark, orchids absorb water and nutrients from the air and rain and the tree. They adapt to surviving when rain is scarce by hoarding water in thick leaves, stems and roots.

Water Requirements for Orchids:
Water orchids thoroughly about once a week and then allow them to dry slightly before watering again. Orchids are equipped to withstand periods of forgetfulness but not over-watering.

Temperature Requirements for Orchids:
In nature most orchids experience a big difference between day and night temperatures. Warm-growing orchids like phalaenopsis require temperatures above 60 F. Intermediate growers like cattleyas, prefer winter nights around 55 F. Cool-growing orchids like cymbidiums are accustomed to winter nights of 50 F.

Light Requirements for Orchids:
Orchids are classified into three other groups depending on the intensity of light they require namely, high (3,000 foot-candles), medium (2,000 foot-candles) and low (1,000 to 1,500 foot-candles). Most orchids require plenty of light. Many orchids, such as phalaenopsis and paphiopedilums require less light. Orchids requiring more light, such as vandas and cymbidiums need natural sunlight or high-intensity discharge lights to bloom. Orchids that do not bloom often require more light to facilitate flowering.

Fertilizing Orchids:
Orchids do not require abundant doses of fertilizer but to maintain healthy plants and regular blooms apply a weak solution fertilizer once a week. Each month, water with plain water to flush out accumulated fertilizer salts. Use a blossom-booster fertilizer during autumn, when many orchids initiate flower buds.

Humidity Requirements:
Orchids greatly appreciate adequate humidity. Raising the humidity around orchids results in better flowering. To increase humidity operate a humidifier near the plants or place the pots on flat, black pebbles set in a tray in which water is added until it almost covers the stones.

Orchids generally have a reputation for being very fussy plants. In order to cultivate them successfully, one must meet their requirements for light, temperature and humidity. But only if you provide the proper environment for the growth, you'll be rewarded with fabulous blooms.

Warm-temperature orchids usually require a medium to strong light, which one can easily provide by placing them in a southern exposure during the winter and an east-facing window for the rest of the year. The temperature should always be kept at 63 to 65 degrees Fahrenheit during the night and 75 to 90 degrees during the day.

Watering requirements for orchids are usually very specific. While the plants are just approaching dryness, always water very heavily from the top of the container, and always make sure to water all the way around. It would be the best to water in the morning so that the foliage has time to dry during the day after that apply water until it flows freely from all drainage holes.

Orchids grow best in soil but in a bark mix formulated especially for them which are available at garden centers.

Humidity trays are also essential for the proper cultivation of orchids, which grow naturally in rain forests and jungles, where the humidity level is generally high. Always remember to fill the plants' saucers with gravel, or place pots on a gravel-filled tray. Water the gravel to supply sufficient humidity to plants, but don't permit pots to sit in standing water.

The answer to the question that what is the easiest orchid to grow depends on whether you are looking for something to grow indoors or outdoors.

Phalaenopsis species of orchids are among the easiest and the most rewarding orchids to grow. An American Orchid Society demographic survey showed that Phalaenopsis have already become Americas favorite orchid. These plants adapt well to the environment of the home or office right from the time that the first flower bud opens, the sprays will always remain in bloom for the next 2 to 3 months.

Odontoglossum and Oncidium intergeneric hybrids comprised of a very large group of orchid species from many different genera. The Odontoglossum or the Oncidium alliance is very popular among orchid growers because of the reason that their cultural flexibility and striking sprays of long-lasting flowers. These plants may be easily grown with relative comfort in the home or on a sheltered patio.
