Heating elements are found in common household appliances, automobiles, industrial products, medical appliances and so on. Heating element converts electricity to heat. The standard heating element found in most of the consumer appliances is chromium of alloy filaments .The most commonly used heating element is nichrome. Nichrome is not only an inexpensive element but also an element with high resistance. The heating element is made of an inner wire surrounded by filler material enclosed in a copper or stainless steel sheath.

Types of heating elements

1. Alloy of nickel and chromium branded as nichrome is a widely used heating element in hair dryers, ovens and toasters. This heating element is silver-grey in color and is corrosion resistant.
2. Coil of nichrome wire in a ceramic binder and sealed inside a metal shell is called calrod or sealed element. These elements can be a straight rod as in toasters or can be coiled to fit in a smaller space as in electric stoves and coffee maker.
3. PTC ceramic or Positive Thermal Coefficient ceramic is a heating material with high resistivity. Thin film of this material is used in automotive rear window defrost heaters, expensive hair dryers and space heaters.
4. Another heating element is heat lamp that is a tubular high power incandescent lamp that radiates infrared. This is usually found in radiant space heaters and food warmers. Heat lamp is used for creating heat for the purpose of animal husbandry.

For high temperature furnaces the heating elements are made of materials like platinum, molybdenum disilicide and silicon carbide.

Silicon Carbide Electric Element

Silicon carbide igniters are common in gas ovens. Silicon carbide electric heating elements are used in furnaces or kiln and as a radiant heat source. These heating elements are designed for high temperature thermal processing applications. Silicon carbide heating elements are economical, dependable, clean, quiet and safe.

Moldatherm Heating Element

This heating element is used in conveyer furnaces. Moldatherm heaters have superior temperature uniformity. Durability and extended lifetime are key features. Moldatherm heating elements have superior control over temperatures. The energy consumption is less if the heating element is Moldatherm.

LGO Heating Element

LGO or Light Gauge Over-bend heating elements offer fast temperature ramping compared to other standard industry heating elements. These elements have no magnetic field inside the tube. These elements are durable and have extended lifetime features and save upto 40% of electricity.

Heating installation is a growing source of heating in the cold countries. Heating installations are installed in both residential and commercial buildings. The heating systems of earlier days relied on air movement and the ducts were oversized. This resulted in noisy and dusty systems. Today electric heating is better as they are not only safe and reliable but clean and economical too.

Conventional Heating System v/s Contemporary Heating System

Conventional heating system used hot water baseboard or forced hot air. The heat is blown into a room at high temperatures. This light hot air rises above the heavier cold air. So your feet remain chilly and the head becomes warm. Even if you turn the thermostat high, the hot air will keep rising. On the other hand, in the contemporary heating system the floor gradually warms to a maximum temperature and then acts as a huge radiator. This keeps our toes warm and comfortable and head cool. The Romans used this technique in 40 AD.

Radiant Heating Systems for Wooden Floors

The heat source is directly beneath the flooring in the radiant heat installations. Wood flooring can be installed over radiant heat as long as the right kind of wood is used. While installing wood flooring care need to be taken that dry slab and dry sub floor is used. Turning on the radiant heating system before installation of wooden floor can dry the slabs and the sub floor system. If the moisture is not removed before the installation then there is a fair chance of moisture entering the wooden flooring when the heat is turned on. This will result in the expansion, contraction, cracks, cup and bow excessively in the flooring. All species of wood are not good for an installation over radiant heating. It is best to take the advice of a professional. The three thermostats that control the tubing water supply temperature, room temperature and one for outside the house – works best for the wood flooring. Three thermostats are required, as people tend to raise the heat when they are cold, however, the system with three thermostats adapts itself to conditions both inside and out side. The thermostat fixed outside adapts the system for the colder climate and a thermostat of the tube controls the temperature of water. The electric radiant floor heating is more efficient than other heating systems. It is a misconception that the electric radiant heating is very energy consuming.

Energy generated from the sun is solar energy and it can be collected and conserved for later use. Solar energy is one of the cheapest forms of energy that saves you from paying monstrous electric bills. Solar energy is used for heating, building and in homes during winter and also for heating water.

DIY Passive solar heating

The DIY solar heating is today used in most of the homes as it helps in heating the homes during winter effectively and efficiently. The passive solar energy systems do not have pumps and circulation methods for heat and energy transfers. The most important part of the passive solar component is the south facing side of the structure. The structures that shade the southern surface of the house has to be cleared else it will be a waste of solar energy. The DIY heating with passive solar heating, focuses on windows that face the south side of the home. Make sure that there are large windows to take full advantage of the power of the sun and also to add materials to the flooring below the windows that absorb heat and then radiate it after the sunset. This type of DIY passive solar heating is known as "direct gain". The demerit of this heating is that though the strategy is simple the heat loss is high. This is because the windows create heat during day and are insulators at night. To make this type of heating effective sunspaces and trombe walls need to be added to the south side of the house.

Sunspaces

Sunspace is like a greenhouse and is built on the southern side of the solar structure. The sunspace is heated when the sunlight passes through glass or other glazing materials. Proper ventilation helps the heat to circulate into the building.

Trombe wall

Trombe wall is one of the techniques that are used in passive solar heating for thermal storage and delivery. Trombe is named after Felix Trombe. Trombe wall is an eight to 16 inch thick masonry wall coated with a dark heat-absorbing material and faced with a single or double layer of glass. The glass placed in the wall creates a small airspace. The heat from the sun that passes through the glass is absorbed by the dark surface and stored in the wall and slowly transferred inward through the masonry. Applying a selective surface to trombe wall improves its performance by reducing the amount of infrared energy radiated back through the glass. The selective surface is a sheet of metal foil that is pasted on the outside surface of the wall. This metal absorbs the radiation in the visible portion of the solar spectrum and emits very little infrared rays. Rooms heated by trombe wall are more comfortable than those heated by forced-air furnaces.

A quick dip in the pool after work or a poolside gathering with family and friends is possible during winter if a solar heater is installed in the pool. Solar pool heating system heats up the pool while you relax and enjoy swimming. Solar pool heater helps reduce the enormous energy bills while letting you enjoy the swim in your heated pool.

How Does Solar Pool Heater Function?

Energy from the sun is the solar energy and it is just another fuel to heat the pool. The water that is circulated through the filter using the pump is automatically diverted so that it flows through the many small passages of solar collector. Water is heated by the sun when passed through the collector. The water then flows back directly into the pool. In this operation, the water goes from pool to pump, from pump to filter, from filter to collectors and then into the pool. When the water in the pool has reached the desired temperature the water bypasses the solar collector and returns to the pool. It is recommended that the solar collectors be placed where maximum amount of sun rays fall during the day.

Solar Heater Collectors

While choosing a collector, get an unglazed one as this collector delivers heat more effectively to the pool than the covered collectors. Moreover, uncovered collectors are less expensive when compared to the covered collectors. Solar pool heater requires not much of maintenance beyond the usual pool winterizing procedures. The operating cost of the solar heater is almost zero as the energy from the sun is free. The cost of installing an electric pump is generally compared to the cost of a solar heating system. The annual cost of electricity to run a heat pump could be two thirds of the cost of natural gas or one-third the cost of electricity for conventional resistance electric heater, but the sun's energy is free.

The cold swimming pool is mostly used only in summer and remains unused during the harsh winters. The implementation of solar pool heaters is cost effective and enhances the enjoyment of swimming and also adds value to the home. Proper sizing and installation along with quality product are primary concerns when considering a solar heater for the pool. Solar pool heaters are an investment.

Burning fossil fuels to heat water and to keep the home warm is one of the biggest sources of CO2. Now there is improved efficiency by installing a modern condensing boiler and estimate that this change has reduced our emissions of CO2 from domestic heating by about 30%. It is a very welcome saving but it would be nice by avoiding burning fossil fuels completely.

Available ranges

There is a range of heating system options available to warm the air and wet central heating systems for individual room heaters by using gas, electricity, solid fuel, oil or LPG. The choice of system is influenced by a number of factors. They include the availability of fuels, the equipment size, fuel storage requirements, the controllability of fuel combustion, the running costs and lastly, the capital cost of the equipment.

Choice of Heating System

The most common form of domestic heating installation is the wet central heating system. By using copper pipe to circulate heated water between the heat generator and the heat emitters the room get its temperature quickly. Copper based components are mainly used in this form of heating system. Few important design criteria that include the maximum recommended water velocities and pump in heating installation. The tube size is considered with specific detail given to safe and efficient system operation too. Irrespective of the heating system type, the supply and storage of domestic hot water is best achieved using copper cylinder and copper tubing. This can be an integral part of the total heating system. It is a separate package where individual room heaters are used. Solar heating and heat pumps are alternative methods of providing cheap domestic hot water. This is where a boiler supplies both heating and hot water services without priority controls. An additional boiler power of up to 2.0 kW may be required depending on the consumption of hot water.

Setting up a heating system in the home is not an easy task. A lot of work is involved in measurements, the right equipment and the installation of the right system. It is always recommended that a professional heating contractor does the job rather than try and do it yourself.

Important Factors for Selecting a Heating Contractor

Before choosing a heating contractor to set up the system at home, there are a few things one must take into account. The heating contractor must be professionally qualified. Most companies that supply such professionals will hold their credentials. Their contact information is again important, as you would need to be in touch with them constantly while the task is being undertaken. It is advisable to take down their address, phone number, insurance company and account and license numbers.

Scope of Work

The heating contractor should be able to provide you with a description of all the work that needs to be carried out. The overall scope of the work as well as the minor details that begin with the foundation to the finishing must be informed to the homeowners. The quality and quantity of materials, the work hours and the cost involved should be drawn up in the contract before the work is undertaken.

Written Contracts, Licensing and Insurance

It is important that a proper written contract is in place before the work begins. A check on the contractor's license and insurance is also mandatory as the licensing laws and insurance covers vary from state to state. Work permits and contract cancellations will matter in case the contract job does not meet with your expectations and you feel the need to pull up the contractor for shoddy work.

Where to Find a Heating Contractor?

The National Association of Home Builders can provide a list of members that include professional heating contractors. The local building department and even a local lumberyard can provide the details of local heating contractors. The yellow pages can also help in the task of finding a good heating contractor. The Internet with its various websites can also be a good source of information on heating contractors in the area.

Heating ventilation and air conditioner ducts have holes in the floors, walls or ceilings to allow heated or cold air to pass from the ductwork to the interior of the building. For safety and decorative reasons vent covers are placed over these holes. The decorative vents come in a variety of styles and designs. Simple and purely functional vents are also available.

Vent Designs

Vents are designed in such a way that so as to allow air to pass through them. There are styles like grate and louvers. The louvers are designed to adjust the increase or decrease airflow. Air deflectors on top of the vent covers are also used to direct air to a certain part of the room. The deflectors redirect warm air to the lower part of the room and push cool air higher into the room. Air deflectors also redirect heat or air conditioning under cabinets and furnitures for better air dispersal.

Vent Cover Installation and Maintenance

Installation of vent covers is simple and requires only two screws. Anyone who has screwdrivers can install the vent. Maintenance of vent cover is simple and requires only a duster, a small brush or a vacuum cleaner to clean. Filters can be placed beneath the vent covers to collect dust and debris. The filters need to be replaced with new ones frequently.

Magnetic Vent Covers

Magnetic vent covers are inexpensive and simple to use. Magnetic vent covers are made of sturdy but thin magnetic sheet. Magnetic vents covers are used to cut off or limit airflow to certain spaces. As they are magnetic they slip into place easily. Another interesting feature of magnetic vent is that they can be painted or wall papered so that they become virtually unnoticeable.

Types of Vent Covers

Vent covers are made of wood or metal. They are mainly designed to cover a vent and thereby give it a finished look instead of leaving a hole in the wall, floor or ceiling. There are vent covers for both, registers as well as return vents. Basically vent covers are made of metal and come in a variety of finishes, including coated white, brass and bronze. Wood vent covers can be stained or painted to match the interior but are more expensive than the metal. You need to pay attention while selecting vent covers for your register vents and return air vents. The vent covers for registers are made to fit the opening and are held in place because of the gravity. Covers for the wall or ceiling are attached to the wall or ceiling using screws.

In times of cold heating is essential to every home. Heating products hence deliver warmth and comfort during those low temperature days. Heating products include a vast variety of products which dispel cold and make work and living more comfortable. So if the water coming from the kitchen sink is too cold to wash your dishes with, or if the flooring of the house is frigid in the winters, or if the rooms get too cold for comfort, heating products are required.

Heating products involve the raising the temperature of either water, the air or solids and hence dissipating controlled heat to the required area. Water heating systems involve the use of heating products to create instantaneous hot water or stored hot water, ready for use. Water is heated either directly in the storage cylinder, for example by an electric immersion heater or from a remote boiler.

Apart from the provision of hot water, heating products are also applied in central heating to ensure that people are provided with warmth at a level at which they can remain comfortable. Heating centrally can be done by under-floor heating pipes, forced warm air through ducts-grills, or radiators.

Heating products include a vast range of items:

1) Boilers, whether they are oil boilers, electric boilers or gas condensing boilers. The fuels for each vary and their cost effectiveness too varies.
2) Radiators are designed to emit heat by radiation and convection with a small amount radiating direct from the steel panel. Essentially they heat the air around them and transfer heat to the rest of the room.
3) Under floor heating comprises of heating element (fascia plate or pipes with running water) built into a wall or floor, valves, sensors to control, floor insulation, membranes, additive, etc to ensure your floor is warm and safe.
4) Immersion heaters are dipped into a bucket of water and instantaneously create hot water. They are non-corrosive but have low shelf life.
5) Heating controls are essential heating products as they regulate the amount of temperature that is safe and required by the consumer.
6) Furnaces are used for heating larger areas.
Apart from these there are the usual fireplaces and appliance oriented heating products such as heated hand-towel rail etc.

Heating products are an essential to any dwelling or workplace as the level of comfort and warmth is under your control. However it is important to note that heating products must be safe, reliable, and chosen to suit particular needs as they can become cumbersome, unsafe if not chosen with due diligence.

Heating oil is a kind of refined oil that is made from petroleum. It is the main source of heat in most American homes and is mostly used in furnaces to heat buildings and homes. The cost of procuring heating oil may be large depending on the crude oil used for extracting the heating oil and also the refining processes involved.

Use of Heating Oil

Surviving the cold winter months is impossible without providing adequate heating for the homes and buildings. Furnaces that provide heat are regularly cleaned and fuel in the form of heating oil is supplied to ensure they function to their optimum levels. Heating oil can either be stored in underground tanks or can be supplied as and when required. Although the prices of heating oil may vary greatly over a period of time, it is still considered the best source of energy fuel for bringing warmth to homes.

Storage of Heating Oil

Heating oil is mostly supplied to homes by trucks and can then be stored in underground storage tanks. While it makes sense to fill the storage tanks with heating oil during the summer months when the prices are low, most underground tanks do not have the storage capacity of lasting through the winter months. This results in most homes ending up buying heating oil during winter months at high prices again.

Heating Oil Costs

Heating oil costs vary greatly as with other petroleum products. Although many heating oil suppliers may spread the cost over the year, most households could end up with large utility bills in winter that may even reach shocking levels. Using methods such as weatherproofing homes, careful use of the thermostat and alternative ways of heating the home through fireplaces, etc., can help in controlling the money spent over heating oil purchases.

Alternatives to Using Heating Oil

While heating oil is the main source of fuel for most homes, it is still costlier as compared to certain traditional methods of heating. Also, simple ideas can keep the bills at a lower cost and the homes warm. These include weatherproofing the house, using close-fitting windows and doors, using weather stripping them to keep out cold winds, allowing the sun to enter the rooms during the day and using insulated curtains to cover windows to prevent heat loss.

Heating your home means installing heaters that provide comfort and safety to the family and at the same time keep the energy bills low. The cost of operating heating equipment is more than half of the total utility bill. Only recently was the equipment with high-energy efficiency available. Depending on where you reside and the structure and size of the house, you can install the heating equipment. Forced-air heating, fueled by gas, oil, or electricity is a very common type of central heating. Other types of heating include radiant electric and hot water.

Furnace

The size of a furnace is critical to efficiency. A system that's too large wastes energy warming up and cooling down as it continuously cycles off and on a furnace that is too small will fail to warm the house. The size of a heating system is measured by its "Btu" per hour input or output capacity, depending upon the manufacturer.

Heat Pumps

Heat pumps are most effective at saving energy when in the heating mode. The problem with an air-source heat pump in a cold climate is that the heat pump works less efficiently at lower outdoor temperatures. Whether or not a heat pump will save you money on energy bills depends on a number of factors, including the type of fuel prevalent, climate, and the amount of insulation and other energy-efficient features built into your home

Radiant floor heating

Radiant floor heating is friendly. It warms you silently, invisibly, and relatively economically. You will need to choose between electric and hydronic systems radiant floor heating systems. You will also need to consider whether the installation will be 'wet' that is embedded in a concrete slab or light weight concrete or 'dry' that is attached on top or beneath the sub floor or sandwiched between two layers of sub flooring. The right choices will depend on whether you're dealing with new or existing construction, the type of finish floor you have or wish to install, energy costs in your area, and how much you're willing to spend. Radiant heating is just heating. It will not cool your home or clean the air. However it will offer your bare feet a toasty welcome when you step out of the shower or bed.

Heating the living space is a must during the winters. One form of heating the homes is under floor heating. Under floor heating is one of the popular form of heating as it is inexpensive to install and economical. There is not much of maintenance and the heat is evenly distributed. The heat generated by DIY under-floor heating system has a soothing and comfortable effect.

What is Under-floor heating?

In conventional central heating the heat is convected air that rises above the cold air and makes the ceiling warm. In under-floor heating temperature between the floor and ceiling is evenly distributed and is absorbed by people and objects in the room.

How under-floor heating function?

Warm water from the boiler system is circulated through the pipe embedded in the floor and is connected to a manifold. The manifold provides water temperature control, blending the hot water of the heating system to ideal and safe temperatures. A thermostat is fitted in the room and connected to an electrically operated valve which controls the temperature. Some DIY under-floor heating systems are easy to install and some may require the skill of a professional.

DIY under-floor Mats and Heating Systems

DIY under-floor heating system can be installed on any type of flooring – ceramic tiles, granite flooring and other natural stone product. The thin under-floor heating mats are very thin and easy to lie. Hot-water DIY heating systems produce enough heating provided right size pipes are used. These are installed within the concrete slab on under a wood sub-flooring system. The hot water systems require boilers or water heaters to generate the heat transferred by the heating pipes under the flooring.

Are under-floor heating expensive?

The cost of buying and installing the under-floor heating system is very much similar to the cost of buying and installing radiators. The under-floor heaters use lower water temperatures so are cheaper to run than other heating systems. The heating affords greater comfort due to even distribution of temperatures. Under-floor heating system can be installed in any floor type. However some considerations need to be given to the thickness and ability of the material to conduct heat. For instance carpet underlay should not be too thick and wooden floor should be less in thickness.

Heating systems and air conditioners are appliances that most homes invariably have. Installation of heating systems or air conditioners depend on many factors such as size of the house, number of rooms, amount of money spent on such appliances, energy resources available, lifestyle of the people at home and last but not the least, the budget kept aside for installation as well as maintenance of these expensive units.

Heating and cooling Components

Heating cooling components include ducts and vents, thermostats, insulation and ceiling fans. Most of these components can be easily programmed or fixed to make the heating and cooling system more energy efficient and save money as well. Thermostats can be programmed to control the heat or cold according to the needs of the occupants of the house. Ducts and vents can be sealed in order to prevent higher energy bills. Utility bills can be kept under control with a minimal effort if energy or fuel is not wasted unnecessarily.

Climate control

Heating, ventilating and air conditioning, together known as HVAC, are functions that are interrelated. The design, installation and use of the systems for these functions are often a very important decision for a home designer or homeowner. It is not necessary that these functions are thought about only when constructing a new home or purchasing one of these systems. Even replacing an existing system can turn out to be a major decision in terms of energy resources and money spent on improvising. Often, air handlers are used in one whole unit including the blower, heating and cooling components, the filters and the smaller parts. The air handler may not include the ductwork through the house.

Resources

Heating and cooling systems come in a variety of models and prices to suit different types of homes in different climatic conditions. Whatever the type of system, the basic functions of heating, cooling and ventilation prove to be important. Any utility appliance manufacturer or supplier must provide the homeowner with a system that is efficient and effective over a relatively longer period of time. Books, manuals, television programs and the Internet are possible resources for information on the installation, use and maintenance of heating and cooling systems.

Heating from a central source is known as central heating. In olden days the central heating was in form of an open fire under the floor and the heat was pushed in through large ducts built into the floor. Today, the central heating system uses water as the medium for central heating. A centrally heated house is cheaper than installing independent fireplaces in each of the rooms. A well-designed central heating system with good quality controls can save a lot of energy.

Central Heating System

The boiler plays a major role in the central heating system. The pipes and radiators are connected to the boiler. Though the boiler provides heat it is the pump that transfers the heated water from the broiler to the radiators to and fro. The heating systems can be custom made according to the customer preference. Carefully designed and installed system and the one that is maintained regularly will keep the fuel cost low and will be functioning without giving any trouble. The different types of central heating systems are open vented, sealed system, one pipe system, two-pipe system, micro bore system and pump positions.

Central Heating Boilers

Boilers are the heat generators and are required to heat the rooms. It is advisable to install the boiler that matches the size of the building. The fuel bills are likely to go up if the boiler is over sized and if the boiler is undersized the heat generated may not be enough. The output of the radiators, pipes and cylinders determines the size of the boiler.

Flue Boilers

Flue is a duct that supplies air to the gas-burning appliances and removes the burnt gas from the pipes. The types of flue boilers are balance flue or room sealed broiler and open flue broiler. The room sealed or balance flue boilers are highly recommended boilers. In balance flue boiler the air for combustion of gas is taken from outside through a duct and the fumes from the burnt gas are taken out through the second duct. The open flue boilers are not recommended. This is because by chance a fault develops in the boiler there is a possibility of poisonous fumes entering the living space.

Boiler Ventilation

Ventilation is installed to keep the boiler cool if fitted in a small compartment. The size of the ventilation depends on the heat input of the boiler and the type of flue used.

The different types of boilers available are back boilers, cast iron boilers, combination, condensing and low water content boilers. Most of the modern boilers are now fanned flue and room sealed which is not only the safest way but also fuel effective.

Two thousand years ago the Romans used the radiant under-floor heating and even today it is the most popular form of central heating in Europe. It is now spreading gradually in North America and rest of the world.

Benefits of Radiant Floor Heating System

In radiant floor heating system, heat is radiated from the floor and is delivered evenly throughout the room. Whereas a forced air system delivers heat that quickly rises to the ceiling and causes discomfort. The operation of the radiant floor heating system is silent. Radiant floor heating system is the most efficient heating system as it consumes less energy compared to forced air heating systems. For a healthier dust and germ free home it is recommended to use radiant floor heating system. Radiant heating system can be installed in any flooring whether it is wood, tile or uncovered concrete floors. Zoning different areas of home to different temperatures to fit ones lifestyle is possible with radiant heat. Radiant heat systems can be installed within the structure of your home. Vents, baseboards or radiators need not be taken into consideration when decorating or furnishing the home. Radiant heating system adds value to the home since this heating can be implemented in the garage or in the driveway to melt the snow during winter. It may freeze outside but the radiant system will keep you warm from head to toe. So installing radiant floor heating will keep you comfortable during the winter.

Why is Radiant Heating System more Energy Efficient?

The three modes of energy transfer are conduction, convection and radiant heat (radiation). Conduction is heat flow through matter whereas convection is the heat flow through the air. Radiation is the transmission of electromagnetic rays through space. They are energy and not temperature. All objects emit these rays of energy in all direction until they are deflected or absorbed. To understand the radiant heating consider yourself taking a walk on a cool day. As you step out of the shade of your home into the sunlight your body absorbs some rays. You begin to warm up even though the air temperature around you is the same as when you were in your home. The heat you feel from the sun is radiant heat. Radiant heating system allows saving upto 50% compared to other heating systems.

Central Heating Installation is critical to ensure that your home or workplace is perfectly warm. One can conduct such Central Heating Installation as a DIY, but it is recommended that an expert contractor carry out the Central Heating Installation.

Central Heating Installation is dependant on each place's structural patterns and is unique to each structure. However one can generally classify this in few types.

The Conventional Central Heating Installation requires two tanks, one – cold water storage and the other feed tank and also a hot water cylinder. This system requires large space for storage so requires prior thinking in installation.

System Boiler Central Heating Installation requires a storage tank too but most of the components are inbuilt and hence installation is cheaper and quicker. Thus a sealed system including a pressure relief valve and a pressure gauge removes the need for a feed and expansion tank.

Combination Boiler Central Heating Installation does not require tanks as it runs on mains pressure water. It also eliminates the need for a hot water cylinder as it instantly heats the water when it is needed. It also requires the least amount of plumbing thus offering a cost saving when installing.

Heating System

A water central heating system consists of basically the boiler, the radiators and the interconnecting piping. The piping is generally installed below the radiator. Where the piping is above the radiators there must be bleed valves to allow any air in the system to be released. The piping can be below the floor or in the ceiling. In wooden floors it can be concealed below floorboards with risers connecting out of holes to radiators. The piping can go along the joist or across it through cut outs. It should not support the weight of the floor as it would increase chances of breakage. In suspended ceilings piping is normally installed between the joists of the ceiling from above. One can also run the feed pipes around the top of the wall just below the ceiling with fall pipes. The piping should be insulated as it is safer and also there is energy conservation. Measuring heat loss of a room will help conserve energy as well.

Some aspects one must not forget in central heating installation are:

1) Air temperature at feet level, not greater than 3 degrees C below that at head level.
2) Airflow past the body is horizontal and at variable velocity.
3) Room surface temperatures not above the air temperatures.
4) Relative humidity between 40% to 60%.
5) Adequate temperature control methods.
6) Safety procedures.
7) Cost-effective longevity.

During central heating installation one must identify what is best suited for your purposes, needs and pocket. It should not be a burden or over time reduce the value of your property. Central heating installation is best when a balance between installation cost and optimum usage is obtained.

A good heating system also needs to be well designed. Factors such as the house construction, the location, the kind of materials used is to be considered. The age of the people who would be using the heating system as well as their lifestyle is also of much importance. Operating efficiency and running costs on a long-term basis are also to be taken care of while designing a heating system.

Energy efficiency

Any heating system that is to be set up must be designed in such a way so as to meet the necessary requirements of the home and at the same time save energy in every possible way. Heating systems may be of central type or baseboard types. The fuel used can be gas, oil, wood, coal and electricity. Efficient use of energy will result in saving costs and improve effectiveness of the heating system used.

Cost savings

While designing a home heating system, it is important to keep in mind that the initial expense would later be supplemented by more spending on regular maintenance and upkeep of the heating system. Continuous supply of fuel will also ensure that the costs are kept high. The only way out is to keep the fuel efficiency high by controlling the system with thermostats and making use of alternative ways of heating up the rooms.

Heating system designs

The right equipment can go a long way in cutting down bills. Also, fuel storage should be provided for when a heating system is being put into place. A professional heating contractor's services are highly recommended. This will also help in bringing down installation and maintenance costs as well as lowering expenditure on materials and spares.

Resources

Many professional heating contractors as well as heating system suppliers guide the buyers with relevant information before the selection of equipment and material. Comparing energy efficiency, costs, energy consumption and time and energy spent on getting a good heating system installed will be well worth the effort while trying to design a heating system. Online sites, manuals and books on such systems are widely available.

Heating systems use various energy resources such as oil, gas, electricity, wood and even coal. Oil and gas are costly energy resources as compared to wood and coal. But all of them are resources that are rapidly depleting and resulting in being purchased by homeowners at higher prices each year.

Energy Consumption for Home Heating

If the house is large or has more number of rooms that require heating during the cold winter months, energy consumption can reach alarming levels resulting in very high utility bills. The best way to minimize bills is to use the heating system in a careful manner so as to conserve energy. Regular service and maintenance of all equipment used at intervals of time is also recommended. Seeking professional help from contractors or equipment suppliers will also help in controlling energy consumption.

Need for energy conservation

Energy conservation is considered important in today's fragile environment and rapidly deteriorating energy reserves. Everyone from homeowners to engineers, architects, contractors, designers, homebuilders, utility companies and utility service providers are looking at ways and means to conserve energy. Heating systems installed in homes use different fuels for energy and must be regularly serviced and maintained to ensure conservation and prevent wastage. Books and manuals that give advice on energy conservation also serve the purpose of important information and updates regarding the same.

Resources

Heating and energy related articles could be found in manuals, books and expert advice in brochures as well as on websites on the Internet. Most local building associations would also have booklets or information on efficient use of utility systems and appliances at home and in buildings. It is important to remember that saving energy is as important as spending energy. Use of different appliances must also be made to that effect.

A few tips on energy conversation

Efficiency improvements for applications and gadgets in the building or at home can greatly increase the amount of energy saved. Proper use of heating and air conditioning systems, water systems, effective use of lighting and sunlight can help in reducing utility bills from exceeding their budget.

Diy heating is a difficult task and not one that can be easily done. Small maintenance tasks are easily achievable but actually setting up a heating system requires professional skills. Heating contractors must be consulted for any setting up any system but it is recommended that these contractors be hired for the installation.

Skill sets required

A special set of skill sets would be required to ensure that the system is suitable for the home and the measurements for setting up the furnaces or boilers need to be just as right. Use of special hand and power tools is necessary. It is important to keep in mind that setting up a heating system can take up to several days even when professional experts are hired. Hence, diy enthusiasts must be prepared for the task well in advance.

Replacing the old heating system

Old furnaces or heating systems need to be carefully replaced. It is often observed that the space occupied by the older system may not fit the new heating system purchased. Accordingly changes to the floor or ceiling will have to be carried out. Also, it is not advisable to vent the older cooling systems into the atmosphere, as they could prove hazardous. Professional contractors who have special equipment to recycle the gas from the older equipment best handle this kind of situation.

Plumbing

In case the existing furnace is supplied with gas or oil and there is a need for changing the pipes of the existing system, diy plumbing skills also need to be polished. A lot of equipment that is owned by plumbers is expensive and it is recommended to try and get professional help in this task. This is because expensive equipment and inadequate knowledge of plumbing tasks may prove to be a disaster in the making.

Precautions while diy heating

There are many precautions that one must think about before plunging into diy heating. There is a great deal of calculation and measurement involved in the setting up of the right heating system. Added costs and materials may also prove to be huge. Also, if the setting up of the system is not done properly, there is every possibility of impending danger to the members of the family. Hence, incase there is really an urge to diy heating, it must be under the supervision and guidance of an expert.

You would want your home to be a place of comfort and relaxation at the end of a hectic and active day. Life is made easy in many ways because of electricity. Today electricity lights up our life, powers computers, cooks meals, does laundry and also entertain us. Electricity can be used for our heating needs too.

Benefits of electric heating

Electric heat is versatile and reliable and convenient as no fuel storage is required and no messy ashes need to be hauled out. Therefore, many people appreciate the electric heating, as it is believed to be a clean system. By installing an off-peak electric heating system you can save money and also enjoy the convenience of electric heat. Home heating needs may vary depending on the specification of the house and how the family interacts and lives. Some of the popular choices of electric heating systems are thermal storage systems, electric radiant heating, hydronic heating and convective heating.

Convective Electric Heating

A convective electric heating system uses electric heaters to heat the air that is then circulated throughout a home. This creates warm and comfortable surrounding. An off-peak electric heating system which is very common today is an electric plenum heater. Plenum heaters come in different varieties and installation is easy. The expense incurred is competitive with other home heating options. Electric furnace provides heating and comes in compact size. Electric furnace can be also adapted to an off-peak heating system with addition of an adequate backup-heating source.

Electric Radiant Heating

Electric radiant heating units radiate heat energy that provides quiet heating with low maintenance cost. Electric floor cables are laid on the bed of sand. The electric floor cables heat the sand bed that stores the heat energy for use later. The stored energy radiates into the house for several hours after the sand bed has been warmed. Ceiling heating and cove heating are the other forms of radiant heating available today.

Electric Thermal Storage Heaters

Electric thermal heaters convert electricity into heat during off-peak hours and store the heat in the high-density ceramic bricks for extended period of time. The stored heat is released during peak control periods to maintain constant comfort. Electric storage heating system is safer, cleaner and convenient than oil or gas.
