Anybody who wants to paint the floor always goes with a good option towards the prevention of rusting and it has all benefits of sealing. Sealing a concrete garage floor protects it from road salt and this eliminates concrete dust, makes it easier to prevent stains. It also has primer if one wants to paint the floor.

Steps for floor paint

1. A hose is to scrub the floor with commercial concrete cleaner and degreaser according to the manufacturer's instructions.

2. In stained places the cleaner is soaked for 30 minutes and the application is repeated for stubborn stains.

3. When the floor is dry, the sealer is to be put in a large tray. A brush is to be used to cut in the perimeter and then it is needed to roll the rest with a medium nap paint roller, equipped with a long handle. It is to be applied generously but all puddles are to be rolled out. Sealer will stain surfaces, so apply it carefully and mask other areas when spraying.

4. Tools are to be cleaned in soapy water immediately and then the sealer is allowed to dry as directed by the manufacturer.

5. Two-part of epoxy paint that is designed for use on concrete floors according to the manufacturer's instructions is mixed. Allow the mixed paint to rest for the specified time before application.

6. Base board trim, floor drains are to be masked and others are to be painted.

7. A paintbrush or trim pad is used to cut in paint along the edges.

8. A roller with a long handle attachment is used to apply the rest of the paint.

9. Paint chips add a decorative element and provide a no slip terrazzo-like finish. These chips are to be sprinkled on the wet finish before moving on to the next area.

10. Do not walk on the floor for 12 hours and let it dry perfectly.

Adequacy of the floor paint

Now there is no need to put your carpet and hide your floor that shows the irresponsibility of the house owners. The painting of the floor thus prevents stains and sealing helps it to prevent damages and even the floor remains cleaned forever.

Most existing two-unit homes are permitted under the new legislation, provided they meet applicable municipal planning standards too. And two unit houses should have met Fire Code requirements as well. In general a new apartments must comply with the Building Code and existing apartments must comply with the Fire Code. Both the new and existing apartments must comply with certain property and municipal planning standards. Municipalities have the right to decide where they will allow homes to have additional dwelling units. They can designate areas where they will not allow homes to have additional dwelling units.

What to Consider when Building Basement Apartment?

Walls, floors, ceilings should be covered with materials with a 30 minute fire rating. They must also cover 15-minute fire rating and interconnected smoke alarms, throughout all dwellings in the house. All homeowners must maintain smoke detectors on every elevation and even if the dwelling is not rented or sub-let. Check with the local, provincial or state authority to confirm requirements for smoke detectors in that area. Materials not rated for fire protection are not recommended and usually require installation of a sprinkler system throughout all dwellings in the house. A private entrance must be provided and the route must not involve entering another dwelling. A second means of exit must be provided which can be another door, which is easily accessible and unobstructed.

Before Building an Basement Apartment

Consult Building Code section, to determine the possibility and practicality of the project going to be constructed. Apply for a building permit as well. Consult with local fire and building officials, before actually starting construction and to ensure that the apartment will pass their inspections.

Beware of

There are some private inspection firms who are attempting to capitalize on this opportunity by advertising themselves as basement apartment and fire code specialists. Municipal Building & Fire Departments are the only organizations that have the authority to determine constitute code compliance. So don't get fooled. And check the best people to advice for getting. The estimated cost to upgrade or correct an existing basement apartment can be very high so be careful while getting things done.

If the house has an unfinished basement with enough space it can be converted into a living space. Basement can be decorated to suit one's taste. Utilities can be walled off and the exposed pipes can be covered or rerouted to make space for a complete livable room conversion. Replacing old or damaged surfaces such as walls, ceilings and floors might be all that's necessary to make a room look great. You can install new windows or decrease the size of the existing windows to make the basement bright or dark, as per the taste.

Tips for basement design

Compared to the other rooms, the basement is dark so it has to be brightly lit if there is not much of natural light coming inside. Remove the columns and post as is practical. If necessary, new walls can be installed to conceal the posts and columns wherever possible. Use horizontal design elements to make the room look spacious. Basement is the damp area so water resistant flooring like tiles, vinyl, or area rugs has to be used. To maximise lighting go for French doors instead of solid doors. Include a new heating system with its own thermostat to keep the room warm during winters.

Basement Design with Bright Colors

The walls and the ceiling of the basement should be given bright color schemes since this is the darkest room in the house. Use the varying bright shades of blue, orange, yellow or green. The upholstery of the furnitures in the basement should be bright. If there is already a couch in the basement put a bright slipcover to change the look. Use unique and light colored rugs on the floor to add texture and variety to the floor. Also decorate the walls with good art works. Hang the arts and pictures slightly lower than on the other rooms.

When the need for more living space arises, you can by-pass the attic, forget the backyard and turn to the basement. Decorating the basement is simple and cost-effective. Since basement is beneath and surrounded by earth the temperature remains constant throughout the year. During summer the room is cooler compared to other rooms and winter it is colder than other rooms. Separate heating system has to be installed to heat the room. The basement can be used as a playroom, exercise area, guest space and office room.

Why does a basement leak?

The joints between the floor and the wall are the most common areas where a leak could occur. Rainfall or snow melting above the ground level collects on the surface and because of hydrostatic pressure is forced through the joints where the floor and the wall meet. Wet basements are mostly due to such leakages and require proper waterproofing processes.

Why is basement waterproofing necessary?

Basement waterproofing is necessary to prevent moisture seepage into the basement and keeping it dry. Hydrostatic pressure can cause water and moisture to seep in through the walls and joints. Using a quality waterproofing coating to the walls can prevents this. It is advisable to use the waterproofing coating as per instructions from the manufacturer and not according to one's perception of the extent of waterproofing required. This will keep the walls in good condition and prevent any damage from moisture or water.

How is basement waterproofing done?

The first task is to begin by waterproofing the areas outside the house. Any collection of water near the house should be done away with. When the soil on the surface becomes water-saturated, water is forced to enter inside reaching the joints between the floor and the wall. Low areas around the house should be filled up to ensure water flows away from the house. One can also install a drain system that will collect the water and drains it to the floor drain. It is important that basements are checked for any waterproofing requirements both before and after a flood.

Resources for basement waterproofing

It is recommended that professional basement waterproofing contractors be called in to do the job. However it is important to know a few things about the process for oneself as that will prove beneficial in terms of costs as well as future care. Do-it-yourself installation kits are also available or one can bring a professional contractor to do the job. Most contractors who offer services for drainage and plumbing systems also undertake waterproofing jobs. Doing it before the rains as a precaution will prove to be more beneficial than after the damage is done.

Foundation walls should be checked for water leakage and sealed before for doing the interiors of the basement. The walls need to be insulated when insulating a conditional basement.

Aluminum poured wall system

In this system the configuration can be accurately determined for corner and angles. There are special pouring machines that allow pouring from one designated spot to another. In aluminum poured wall system rods are not required to hold the walls together.

Wood Form Wall System

Wood form wall system is less expensive compared to aluminum wall system. In this system rods are used to hold the walls together and when they are removed the holes in the walls have to be filled with liquid cement. Compared to the aluminum wall system dealing with brick ledge difficulties are easier in wood form wall system. The wood wall system in 7ft 10inches, 8ft 10 inches forms.

Styrofoam Wall System

Styrofoam wall system basement is expensive compared to wood form or aluminum system. But they are unique. Styrofoam system resists moisture and helps to keep your basement warm and dry. The slotted edges on the long sides of the board can accommodate wood nailing strips for attaching the boards to the wall. It also provides a nail base for dry wall avoiding costly framing.

Basement wall designs
The basement walls are designed for different types and different material depending upon the site conditions and the client's budget and requirements. The designed basement walls are plain concrete, concrete reinforced walls; masonry reinforced walls and insulated concrete form walls. These designs are easy to construct and are strong and durable.

Insulating basement walls

Basement walls can be insulated. Prior to that the leaks have to be sealed, band joist should be caulked and sealed to prevent air infiltration at the construction joints and around plumbing and electrical lines and dry vents. Three basic options to insulate the walls are

1. Constructing stud frames at the interior of the foundation walls and the filling the cavities with fiberglass insulation.
2. Installing basement blanket to add resale value without sacrificing space to construct framing.
3. You can use basement wall finishing system that requires no additional paneling.

Windows can make a big difference to a basement. Existing windows can be replaced to provide more lighting and ventilation as well as serve as an egress point in case of emergency.

Choices for Replacing Basement Windows

Old basement windows that have rotted or become rusty can be replaced with modern basement windows made from vinyl and glass. These new windows are long lasting resistant to moisture and rust. This also prevents the growth of mold. Unlike old windows that were difficult to open or allow long objects to pass through them, modern insulated basement windows for replacement are available with sliding sash or regular single units and lockable varieties. Replacement basement windows come in a variety of materials as well as designs. Choices range from single units to skylights to block windows and are made from materials like acrylic, vinyl, wood, glass and even aluminum.

Replacing Basement Windows

Most basement window manufacturers have come up with designs that enable a homeowner to simply dismantle the existing window and fit the new window in its place with minimum damage to the basement wall or structure. If the house is in a low-lying area and is prone to floods or snowstorms, replacement windows must be purchased or manufactured keeping the needs of the homeowner in mind. Materials such as glass and vinyl are preferred as they are termite resistant as well as rot and mildew-resistant. Besides, they are also easy to clean.

Where to Find a Basement Window Replacement?

There are many window manufacturers who make windows exclusively for basements. They can be contacted easily through the yellow pages or can be visited at their shops or their websites that give all the information about the different types of basement windows that are available or can be made to order.

Excessive humidity is one of the main factors that cause mould growth in basements. Moisture and mildew damage your personal belongings that are stored in your basement, but also enable growth of dust mites, fungus and bacteria that are harmful to allergy sufferers. A basement dehumidifier will protect the wooden structures of your house from rotting, water damage dehumidification and mould remediation. Basement dehumidifiers can regulate the ideal relative humidity level for your home. Portable, stationary and ducted basement dehumidifiers are made to handle humidity in one large room or enclosed area.

Dehumidification important to health

An inexpensive humidifier helps to create healthy homes for allergy, asthma and sinus sufferers by improving air quality and moisturizing the air. A warm and cool mist humidifier can help with problems caused by dry air such as dry skin, swollen nasal passages, sinus headaches, and asthma. But installing the right kind of dehumidifier can control mould and mildew. Dehumidifier will control the humidity level in the house and thereby prevents the growth of bacterial growth that is hazardous to health.

How humidifiers function

Dehumidifiers are used to remove the moisture from the air. They are not air coolers. However to remove the moisture they absorb the air and reheat the air to further dry it after it releases its moisture. The room temperature humid air enters the dehumidifier where it is cooled to its dew point which results in it releasing its moisture. The dried air is heated by the combination of latent heat of condensation, which is a natural result of the process. The air, which is emitted from the dehumidifier, is slightly warmer by two to five degrees. Buy a dehumidifier according to the size of the room. If the dehumidifier is small for the job it has to be switched on the entire day, which may eventually heat up the room. The dehumidifier that is installed should have a adjustable humidistat that will shut off the unit when the room become warm.

Points to keep in mind while buying a dehumidifier

Make sure that dehumidifier has adjustable humidity control and auto signal light to know that the dehumidifier is functioning. Auto shut off to shut off the drain pain when the dehumidifier is full. Adjustable humidistat and Deodorizing filter if required are some of the features you need to look out for when buying a dehumidifier

The basement is the first area to be affected by a flood and also the most difficult one to clean up after a flood. Insulation systems for the basement must be able to dry the basement after the flood and maintain the temperature to enable family members to continue using the basement as before. The most important feature of any insulation method or material should be its high moisture-retention properties.

Basement insulation techniques

Most basement insulation techniques involve the use of fiberglass blankets in the walls to provide for insulation. Certain fiberglass insulation techniques also involve polyethylene installation for creating a moisture retention barrier that reduces moisture condensation to a great extent. Another way of basement insulation is to use rigid exterior insulation, which helps keep the moisture and cold and hot winds restricted and helps maintain the temperature in the basement at a constant level.

Problems in carrying out basement insulation

Most homebuilders tend to overlook the basement and do not give it much importance. This can also result in shoddy and inadequate insulation provided for the basement. Considering that the basement is an integral part of any home and also that it is the first to get affected by floods or winds, most moisture related problems can be solved if attention is paid to basement insulation. Hiring professional insulation contractors who would carry out the tasks effectively are recommended. Also basements are most likely to have pipes, ducts and vents and even air-conditioning and washing machine hoses passing through them. Insulation is required to be carried out carefully making sure that important areas like fuse boxes, electrical switches or such other things in the basement are easily accessible even after insulation.

Advantages of basement insulation

The first and most important advantage of basement insulation is that the area is kept dry and moisture-free. This means that problems like mold, mildew, odors and leakages and dampness are automatically taken care of. Utility bills can also be taken care of and greatly reduced if insulation is in place and the basement can be converted into a living space that can be put to various uses by the members of the family.

A flood in the area can cause a great deal of water to collect in the basement. This can turn out into a bad situation, as the water has no place to go and cannot dry up easily. The only way out is to pump out the water using special equipment. Pumping out water must be carried out with extra care as the process may result in pushing up walls and causing structural damage in case water is pumped out in a rapid manner.

Dealing with a Flooded Basement

If the basement is flooded and there is a great amount of water in it, the first step towards cleaning and repairing the basement is to wait for the flood to stop. Put off gas valves and electricity before entering the basement. Pump out the water from the basement in stages as sudden water pumping can cause damage to the walls. Clean out the debris and mud on the floor and then check for repairs to be undertaken. Waterproofing substances can be used to prevent water leaks through cracks in the walls or joints.

Problems Caused by Water in the Basement

The water that collects in the basement may be filled with debris and mud. It can contaminate the things lying about in the basement and also cause damage to the walls and floor. Water that has been collected in the basement remains stagnant with no place to go and results in molds and mildew and bad odors as well. It can lead to the growth of disease producing germs as well. Dehumidifiers may be used for drying the basement.

Preventing Water from Entering the Basement

Basement windows can be covered with plastic covers. This prevents water or snow from entering the basement and collecting inside. Broken washing machine hoses can also cause water to collect in the basement. Checking for broken water pipes or sewage ducts can also be a precautionary measure for preventing water from entering the basement. This can be pumped out or if matters are really worse, professionals in basement repairs can be called to help out.

To build a new home it depends upon the persons' choices and making decisions. So if anyone plans to build a new home, be prepared to spend an endless number of hours looking at options and making final selections. The basic reason is creating a basement strongly effectively. Everyone has a lot of options and choices when it comes to cabinets, faucets, light fixtures and floor coverings like different styles, colors, finishes, price ranges, etc. If anyone is planning a crawl space and their neighbors have basements then it is difficult to sell it at a higher price. This is a price perception issue since many people feel that having a full basement gives them more room even if it is used only for storage purposes. But the potential of the house is always there for someone to finish the basement.

Measure of home building basements

Basements need to be cool which is important in hot climates; they add importance to the home and provide more room. Drainage is important for basements and crawl spaces – as anyone may want water in these locations. Generally slabs and crawl spaces are less expensive than building full basements, especially in conditions where there are a great number of rocks to be removed. But in some areas it is difficult to provide a basement because of presence of solid rocks. If any person who needs a lot of storage or likes to have a basement workspace, then a crawl space or a slab is definitely not the type of foundation that he should consider.

Methods of treatment

Suppose there is no basement then wiring and plumbing should be in the walls or ceilings. Space is also required for the furnace and the water heater in the house. Water pipes are to be insulated especially if they are in the attic. In slab foundations there is a little chance for water and outside gases to leak. Slabs are lower to the ground as a rule and they have fewer steps to go up which can be an advantage for older seniors or people who have difficulty in climbing stairs. There are several potential drawbacks to slab foundations. Any cracks can cause long-term problems and are more difficult to repair. Soil movement, tree roots can lead to cracks in the slab. Slabs homes are also more prone to insect problems.

A dry basement is not necessarily one that is not flooded. Leakages and water seepage may cause wet basements too. A dry basement is one that is completely rid of moisture or water that can come in through walls, floors or vents and joints that are not sealed.

Preventing leakages

The trick to keeping a basement in dry condition is to prevent leaks before they occur. Leaks can occur in a number of places such as the wall of the foundation, the joint between the wall and the floor and existing cracks in walls or floor. Sealing the joints and those parts of the wall or floor where cracks and resultant leaks are likely to occur can prevent leaks.

Preventive Measures to Maintain a Dry Basement

The basic prevent measure to maintain a dry basement is to keep the water out. If the house is located in a low-lying area, collection of water should be prevented. Ducts and drainage pipes that can lead this water away must be installed. Waterproofing is another method to keep a basement dry. Waterproofing substances applied to the floor or walls can prevent water seepage through cracks or leaks. Periodic maintenance and regular inspection of seals should be carried out. It is better to carry out preventive measures before leaks occur than do it later as this saves a lot of time, effort and money. Preventive measures carried out before leaks occur can also help prevent damage to things or stuff that is stored in the basement.

Why a basement needs to be kept dry?

A dry basement will be free from bad odors or leaks that can cause wetness and mold or rot. A dry basement can be used for many purposes. It could be another extension to the house and can be used as a bedroom or business office. Dry basements are also good storage spaces and can be used to their optimum if water and moisture are kept away. Dry basements can be used as living spaces and heating systems can make them as cozy as any living room in the house. Dehumidifiers can help take away unwanted moisture from the basement keeping it dry and warm.

When building a new home plan to include an exterior staircase and entry doors to the basement. The typical basement foundation is nine-feet deep, so stairs are a necessity. The most cost effective stair building solution is to purchase pre-made stringers to support the stairs. The steel supports or stringers are placed within the areaway foundation and bolted to the foundation walls and floor. When the door installation is finished, wooden stair treads are cut and placed in these stringers. Another option is a pre-cast concrete stairway sized to fit the steel door unit. To install doors for existing homes clear out around the foundation and cut through the existing foundation wall. Whether it is a new construction or an old house where you want to install the door, the door unit is assembled on site and installed on top of the foundation wall. The installation of the door unit entails bolting the doorframe into the concrete and caulking for a tight seal. Is the door is steel give a coat of metal enamel to improve the look and life of your door. Always get the advice of a qualified, experienced and professional foundation contractor.

Basement repair is a continuous process for houses in low lying areas. However, the use of proper sealants and waterproofing can reduce the extent of damage caused by leaks or floods to the basement. A lot of basement building companies also provide professional help for repairing existing basements and recommend ways to maintain a basement. Basement repair may cost a good deal of money if the work is not carried out in time or immediately after a flood.

Basement foundation repair

Basement foundations may require waterproofing and repair to fill cracks and stop leaks. Structural changes such as wall position, ducts and pipes and concrete work may be required for repairing basements. Leaks and moisture can result in molds and bad odor. Experts can be hired to repair basement foundations and give it an altogether new look. Sealing walls, foundations and floors can stop mold and mildew growth and prevent further damage to the basement. Sealing cracks can also prevent bad odors that are generally associated with basements.

Basement wall repair

Basement walls are the first to get damaged after a flood. Water can leak through wall joints and unsealed cracks. Quick fix seals may help stem the leakage but this is not the ultimate solution to the problem. The basement wall may also be affected in case water has been pumped out rapidly after a flood. The walls may get pushed up causing structural damage to the basement. Repairs must be undertaken after considering the extent of damage that has occurred. Simple crack repairs to sealing cracks to doing up the entire wall can be among the solutions for basement wall repairs.

Basement floor repair

A flood can be the cause of settled or heaved floors in the basement. Settled or heaved floors are difficult to repair and the best way out it to replace them completely. Repair work on a basement floor can be carried out only after all the water has been dried out and the basement is empty. Special equipment to repair floors may be required. It is recommended that professional basement builders or experts be hired to do the job.

Most people forget about the basement when they plan to add a new living space. The surveys and studies show that finished basements rank behind kitchen and bathroom renovations. The finished basement homes have high prospective resale value.

Advantages of Finished Basements

1. The earth naturally insulates basements. So they are cool in summer and warm in winter. However, if the winter is harsh you can always install a heating system with a separate thermostat.

2. You can have your home office or an expanded kitchen or an additional guest room in the basement. You can even have a large master bedroom in the basement thus freeing the main living area.

3. The house will be quiet and stress free if the basement is converted into a playroom, home entertainment centre, exercise room or other activity room. You can also use the basement as a den, sauna or whirlpool bath area, where you can quietly retreat from other household activity.

When Hiring a Finished Basement Contractor

Always look for a competent basement finishing firm or a contractor. When you are dealing with the professional inquire whether they are the licensed and insured operators. It is necessary to ascertain as to how many years of experience they have in doing the basement works and whether they will take care of the building permit. Always ask for estimation and find out their work schedule. See if they are adaptable to changes and modification and whether they can provide assistance and also recommend useful ideas. Finally ask for a list of recent reference.

Finished Basement Problems and Solution

One of the major problems faced by basement is moisture. Therefore before starting off any work checking out for moisture or taking care of the existing moisture is an absolute must. The moisture will contribute to humid air, mild dew and other factors that will always make it feel like a basement how much ever you spend on designs and interior decorations. The basement will not be comfortable if air is humid in the basement living space. Seal the small cracks in the foundation wall as they can allow the penetration of moisture. Condensation of moisture on the walls has to be prevented or removed. To prevent condensation of moisture increase ventilation, cover the exposed water pipes and installation of wall insulation can prevent the humid air from coming into contact with the damp concrete walls. The basement has to be waterproofed to avoid the water seepage.

In times when the climate does not favour sports to be played outdoors, the basement provides a valuable alternative. One can play ping-pong otherwise known as table tennis in the basement.
Squash and badminton too can be played in the basement.

Squash, Badminton and table tennis

All the three sports involve opponents. If one is running or swimming one tends to stop when one feels exhausted. If one has a suitable opponent one tries to assert one's superiority and in the process stretches one's effort.
Squash provides a physical and mental workout in a relatively short period of time. It is the best game to burn those extra calories. It is a fast sport.

In badminton the shuttlecock has to be hit across the net .It results in a good upper body workout.
Table tennis is the second most popular sport in the world just after soccer. Table tennis is a sport, which demands quick reflexes, speed and good eye hand coordination. Endurance and reflexes matter more than size and strength. People of all backgrounds and types can compete on a level playing field. It is a thinking person's game and a universal sport.

Indoor Gymnasium

One could have an indoor gymnasium in the basement with weights, treadmills, exercise bicycles, bull-worker, climbing machines, skiing machines and rowing machines. So one can keep fit without stepping outdoors.

Table top sports

Billiards, snooker and pool are played on big, flat, cloth covered tables with pockets. The players are supposed to knock the balls into the pockets using a cue ball hit with a stick, which is called cue.

Playing cards
The majority of card games are played with a pack of 52 playing cards which are divided equally into four suits clubs, hearts.spades and diamonds. Each suit has the numbers 1 to 10 followed by the picture cards -king, queen and jack. They are mental games.
Board sports
Various types of board games are played throughout the world, and quite a few have been popular for centuries.
Games such as Monopoly and backgammon are a mixture of luck and skill. Even though luck (usually the throw of dice) plays a part, choices made by the players in the course of the game also help to decide who emerges triumphant
Chess is a game of great skill that calls for the ability to plan moves and recognize threats many steps ahead. There are different kinds of pieces – king, queen, bishop, knight, rook and pawn – and each has its own special way of moving about the board. . The goal of the game is to ensnare (checkmate) the enemy king by putting it in a position where it cannot escape capture.

Basement windows are generally smaller in size than the normal windows that houses have. They are specifically designed to let in natural light, air and also serve as an emergency exit. Insulated windows with sliding sash or regular single units and lockable ones are in popular demand in most homes with basements.

Types of basement windows

Basement windows come in a variety of materials as well as designs. Choices range from single units to skylights to block windows and are made from materials like acrylic, vinyl, wood, glass and even aluminum. Basement windows serve as points of egress in an emergency. Hence they need to be furnished accordingly. Also low-lying areas are susceptible to floods and snowfall. This must also be kept in mind while designing a basement window.

Important tips for remodeling a basement window

Old and rusty metal windows in the basements should be replaced with those made from materials like glass or vinyl as they allow natural light to come in and are also easy to install. Sliding windows are better than single unit windows with a door. Using modern looking windows, which are just as efficient in keeping the dust and water out of the basement, is an effective way to stop leakages and at the same time provide energy. A window also needs to make room for long objects like ladders and boards to be passed through it if necessary. The important points to be kept in mind are; the windows should be rot and mildew-resistant, should be energy efficient, should improve the appearance of the exterior of the house and also be functional enough for use within and outside.

Basement window resources

Many suppliers and contractors dealing in basement remodeling and specialists who provide window installations can be excellent sources of information on the right kind of basement windows and the shops where one can find the best materials for installing a basement window. Online resources also give information about the materials, the price range and the contact details of professional contractors or building material suppliers. Old and rusted basement windows must be replaced with energy efficient windows that enable good ventilation and also serve as egress points. Such window systems are readily available with most suppliers and building material manufacturers.

The basement is traditionally the most difficult room in the home to decorate. Many times it ends up being wasted space, filled with clutter and rarely used. Generally, basements have a dark unfinished look that makes them an uninviting area of the home. Their interiors consist of rough concrete, old wood beams, support pillars, and have few or no windows letting sunlight in. However, with a little creativity and with some great ideas you can turn your basement into one of the best rooms in your home.
Basement Lighting

Basements cannot easily gain access to sunlight. Therefore the only way to create a bright atmosphere in this space is to use a large amount of artificial lighting. This will fill the room, revealing every element and aspect of the basement with bright illumination. If you want a dark and rustic ambience then various mood lights that cast gentle and subdued illumination can be installed along with bright lights. You can also illuminate products made from natural translucent stones, which include wall clocks, lamps, table, and mood lights. These products will glow with a colorful beauty that allows them to fit easily into the rustic interior of the basement, and their gentle, colorful light will create a subdued and understated effect in the space

Basement coves

Basements often have irregular or closed spaces supported by beams and low ceiling. However you can develop little nooks in various corners of the basement to create a romantic setting. If the ceiling is low place and has low and short couches and small coffee tables to give the appearance of a taller room. Use plush and bright area rugs to make the room cosy. You can make this alcove near the entrance if the basement is low. The remaining area can be used as storage area.

Other ideas

Basement can be converted into children's play area, music studio or exercise or recreation room. If the basement were converted into a children's room then soundproofing the room would be a good move, as it will keep the noise down to minimum. Therefore the people upstairs can enjoy their space just like the ones down stairs. If the basement is spacious it can be turned into an exercise room where you can place the treadmill, cycle and other equipment. The space can be used as a recreation room too. You can have placed a pool table or a card table and chairs. If the room is to converted into a exercise room or play room you can place area rugs and cushions which will add a comfort for anyone doing sit-ups or other jarring activities.

Basement finishing can result in a lot of space being used efficiently for different purposes. A basement with a dry floor and walls can be used for entertainment or relaxation, can serve as a business office or a bedroom or can even be used for storage. Certain important measures that can be taken for finishing a basement can actually increase the durability of the basement.

Basic Steps in basement finishing

Basic steps in basement finishing involve installing an effective waterproofing system, guarding against floods and water seepage, and constructing vapor barriers to protect the basement. An inspection of the basement will give an idea of how much work is to be carried out. Finishing details will make the basement more efficient for use. A waterproofing coating will prevent water from damaging the interiors and the walls of the basement. Low lying areas attract water during floods. Pump systems that take away all the extra water can be set up to prevent this. Some basic exterior maintenance outside the house can also be a part of basement finishing.

Finishing for a dry and comfortable basement

A basement floor that is warm, dry and comfortable is more appealing aesthetically as well as for functional purposes. Vapor can get trapped in carpets and cause odors, mold and rot and make the basement smelly and unusable. Using a floor matting system that is waterproof and easy to maintain can take care of this problem. Protection against common problems that are caused due to defective plumbing techniques and inefficient building methods is possible due to basement finishing.

Basement finishing – a necessity

Basement finishing is possible for existing basements as well as remodeled basements. A small investment in basement finishing products and the right precautions will ensure that the basement is ready for use for different purposes and will also add to the life of the basement. Doing away with smelly old basements that were of no use to making basements an integral part of the designer home is where basement finishing makes all the difference. Basements will be an extension of the house if they are designed with the same kind of enthusiasm as one would show in designing the home interiors.

A basement is a room or even an entire floor with many rooms that is either completely or partially situated below the ground floor of the house above it. A basement may be used for many purposes. Many houses, which have basements, may have the basement as an extension of their living space. The basement could be converted into a cozy bedroom, a study, or a business office or may be just an area for entertainment and relaxation.

Renovating an existing basement

If a basement already exists beneath the house, it can be converted into a living space. For this, minor renovations need to be carried out which could involve planning and designing, using the skills of a professional designer if the need arises. The first step towards renovation is to decide what the basement is going to be used for. One needs to keep in mind that the basement is the first area to get affected in case of a flood or snowstorm. Renovation plans would include correcting or changing positions of walls, windows, staircases, ducts, vents and anything that needs to be constructed or removed for changing the basement into the kind of space you want it to be.

Carrying out basement repairs

Basement repairs are carried out if the basement walls have been damaged due to floods or water leakages. Pumping out water rapidly after a flood may also cause damage to the basement walls. A basement floor can settle or heave because of the damage caused by flooding. Special equipment and professional basement builders or contractors are generally hired for carrying out basement repairs. It is recommended that the basement is kept dry as much as possible to prevent such problems that may recur from time to time. Flooding and problems like mold and mildew caused by flooding create most of the problems while considering basement repairs.

Using the basement

Most houses with basements use them as storage areas. Some people may also design the basement as an extension of the house and may create living spaces within the basement. Besides serving as an area for entertainment and relaxation with a television or seating arrangement, basements can also be used for setting up bars which can be used for a get-together with family and friends.
